They found me in pieces, stuffed into three garbage bags, tossed in a dumpster behind the precinct.
The coroner spent the night putting me back together. The only thing missing: my left leg.
"She was doused in sulfuric acid before she died," he said, his voice grim. "Not a shred of flesh left on the bone…"
“Jesus… that’s brutal,” one of the rookie cops muttered, rushing out to puke.
My husband, Joey, frowned. He was the best damn detective captain in the city. In his hands, no case stayed cold for more than three days.
The coroner handed him the report.
“Female, early twenties, died from… well, from pure agony. Blunt force trauma to the head, skull shattered. Sprayed with acid before death, multiple stab wounds to the abdomen… Tortured, basically.”
“Son of a bitch,” Officer Nash muttered. “Dumping the body right outside the precinct – that’s a message.”
Joey’s eyes flickered towards the incomplete body on the table, a rare hint of sadness in his voice. “Barely twenty-five. So young.”
I was twenty-four. Less than a quarter of my life lived.
Joey’s gloved hand hovered over the space where my left leg should have been. “Her left leg?”
My heart skipped a beat.
Would he remember?
Disappointment stabbed at me. He’d missed the clue again.
I had called him.
But I hadn’t said a word.
I’d been in too much pain to speak.
Seeing the disgust on his face when he talked about me… well, at least he’d be happy I was gone.
“Joey, maybe you should go home,” Officer Nash said hesitantly. “It’s almost dinner time, and your wife hasn’t called. Plus, the crime scene is so close to your place. We usually check with nearby residents, and… well, Buck and the others canvassed your building, and nobody’s reported anyone missing. Except… well, nobody answered at your apartment…”
