For days, Joey sifted through medical records. He rubbed his temples, pushing the files away with a sigh.
A young officer knocked on the door.
“Jamie’s here to see you.”
He ushered her into his office, and I watched, a wave of disorientation washing over me.
I’d never been in his office. Whenever I’d brought him lunch, he’d barely let me past the front desk.
But Jamie… she was right at home.
She pulled him down onto the couch, her touch familiar, her voice laced with playful accusation. “You haven’t come to see me in ages, Joey! You think I’m a burden now?”
He shook his head. “Never. I promised to take care of you, and I always keep my promises.”
“It’s just… this case has been a pain in the ass.”
Ignoring all sense of protocol, he cleared his desk and started discussing the case with her.
Jamie gasped, then hugged him from behind, her voice trembling. “That’s terrifying! How can people be so cruel? Have they caught him? What if he comes after me?”
They looked like a perfect couple.
Joey stiffened slightly, then placed a hand on her shoulder, his touch gentle, reassuring.
He had this weird thing – whenever I hugged him from behind, he’d stiffen and push me away. “Don’t do that,” he’d snap. “It’s creepy.”
I’d thought it was just one of his quirks.
But apparently, he reserved his exceptions for someone else.
“I’ll never let anyone hurt you, Jamie. If there’s ever any trouble, call me. Doesn’t matter what I’m doing, I’ll be there. Okay?”
She nodded.
The air between them was thick with unspoken affection.
Until Jamie brought me up.
“Nash said she hasn’t been bringing you lunch lately. Is she coming today? If she sees me here… she’ll make a scene…”
Joey jumped to his feet.
He turned to Jamie. “Don’t worry, I’ll make sure you get home safe.” He called over a rookie cop, giving him strict instructions to escort Jamie home.
Officer Nash’s face was grim. He slammed his fist against the wall. “We found a baby. Down in the sewer. Full term, maybe three months old. Perfectly formed.”
“The coroner said the victim had a recent miscarriage – less than three months. We thought it was from a previous pregnancy, but…”
Joey stumbled back, his face turning white.
He was putting the pieces together.
Then he shook his head, his voice sharp. “No way. That’s just another one of Aria’s tricks. She’s trying to manipulate me.”
“Joey, what’s going on?” Nash asked, confused.
Just then, another officer, frantic, rushed in, waving a file.
“Joey! Aria’s file… Her left leg injury, her pregnancy… It’s a match! It’s the victim!”
