Officer Nash stood beside Joey, his eyes fixed on the file in Joey’s hands.

“Joey,” he said quietly. “Have you considered… what if it’s your sister-in-law? Why are you fighting us? You’re letting the killer get away.”

Joey froze.

His knuckles turned white as he gripped the file.

He opened it, his hands shaking.

Inside were my medical records.

Six months ago, surgery on my left leg. Three months ago, a positive pregnancy test.

Joey’s eyes widened, his body trembling.

You remember, don’t you, Joey?

Six months ago, during the earthquake. He’d rushed out to find Jamie, ignoring the chandelier crashing down from the ceiling. I’d pushed him out of the way.

The chandelier had shattered my left leg.

He’d shoved me aside. “You evil bitch! Even now, you’re trying to stop me from saving Jamie! Get the hell out of my way!”

So that’s what he thought…

He hadn’t even looked back as he ran out of the house, leaving me buried under the rubble.

He’d been furious. “Aria, use your damn brain! You think you can get pregnant that easily? I’m not that lucky.”

Now, he looked like he’d been struck by lightning.

“How… how is this possible? It can’t be…”

“Where’s the baby? Where’s our baby?!”

An officer rushed in, holding a file.

“Joey… the DNA results are back. You and the… the baby… it’s a match.”
