Is Dick Van Dyke Coming Back to Days of Our Lives

For decades, fans of the long-running soap opera Days of Our Lives have followed the twists and turns of John Black’s paternity story. Who was his real father after all? The answer seemed to finally arrive last fall when it was revealed that kindly amnesiac Timothy Robicheaux, played by legendary actor Dick Van Dyke, was John’s biological dad.

While it marked yet another revision to John’s convoluted backstory, this latest development gave his family a welcome sense of resolution and happiness. Timothy may have had his identity stolen years ago by the villainous Tobin Bell character, but Van Dyke’s warm portrayal brought humor and heart to the role of John’s long-lost father.

However, fans were left wondering if this stint marked just a brief cameo or if there were plans for Timothy to stick around Salem. After all, it seemed a shame for John to finally connect with a kind, caring father only for that relationship to be short-lived.

Fortunately, in a recent interview, Van Dyke himself dropped some intriguing hints about potential future appearances. The 97-year-old legend expressed clear enthusiasm about his first soap opera role, describing it as new experience he seemed to thoroughly enjoy.

“I’ve just done my first soap opera,” Van Dyke told Deadline excitedly. “Never done that before! I played an old guy, of course, in a wheelchair. My wife played my attendant.”

He referenced his wife of over a decade, makeup artist Arlene Silver, who actually portrayed a cop that brought the amnesiac Timothy to the hospital and flirtatiously bantered with him.

While Van Dyke didn’t outright confirm more Days appearances, his comments suggest he could be open to encores. He notably said he did his “first” soap opera, implying he may not be averse to doing others.

This buzz comes just ahead of the Daytime Emmy awards this Friday, where Van Dyke is nominated for his performance as Timothy. A winner’s trophy could certainly motivate Days’ writers to make room for the television icon to reprise his role.

Imagine the heartwarming possiblities if Timothy stuck around Salem for holidays, anniversaries and other special occasions. His musical talents could reunite him with Julie Williams, whose husband Doug has sadly passed away. The beloved Bill Hayes, who played Doug, actually got to share the screen and sing with Van Dyke before his death.

With no apparent plans to retire after eight decades in show business, here’s hoping Dick Van Dyke’s joyful John Doe father gets to remain part of the Days universe. His sparkling presence brought a welcome ray of sunshine to John Black’s saga that should only continue to brighten the fictional town.
