Calvin

He was sitting at the island bench in his kitchen as he ate his breakfast and sipped his morning coffee, when he realised there was a message on his phone waiting for him. He’d gotten up and showered, gotten ready for the day without checking it. It was Saturday, and he had no work, and his day was his to–do with as he

pleased.

He hadn’t yet decided on what he was going to do with himself. He clicked it open and was more than surprised to find it was from that phone Marilyn had, and read Cal & Vin, as the sender, as he’d saved that number in his phone. It shocked him more than a little, because he’d never even once in all these weeks had her respond to anything he’d sent.

He’d also not heard it chime with a notification, because he put his phone to do not disturb between 11pm and 7am, so he wouldn’t hear his phone ding or ring or chime with emails, texts or calls about work during his sleeping hours. If he did, he would likely get up to answer it, deal with whatever that person wanted and likely not sleep.

He looked at the time the message came through to him and saw that he’d received it at 4am. That made him frown and access it right away as he felt a bit of panic well up inside him. As he realised the boys or Marilyn were an hour ahead of him, so that message had been sent at 5am their time, and it was not just

after 7am.

Had something happened out there in Virginia? And they needed his help and had tried to contact him, only to have him not hear the notification or respond to them. That could also be seen as very bad on his part. They’d been waiting for a response from him for over three hours. It was going to seem like he didn’t care. He read the message ‘Hi dad, it’s Cal and Vin. We’re going on a trip with mum. We’re going to take this phone but hide it from mum, so you know where we are and don’t worry.

He stared at the phone for a long minute more than surprised and then bit his lip a little as a chuckled tried to escape him, devious children he had it seemed. He wondered just how much trouble they were going to get into when and if Marilyn found out what they’d done.

Though he was more than happy to have his two boys send him a text about their trip, they had just actively reached out to him for the first time ever. He knew he was allowed to answer them as well. Wil had stated he should answer either the boys or Marilyn if they opted to start a conversation of their own free will.

He reread the message and smiled at the word ‘dad‘ that it stated ‘Cal and Vin‘, this text was from both the boys, and it made his heart fill with happiness at the fact that not only did they know who he was, that they also thought of him as their dad and not just a stranger.

He clearly had two cheeky children/ He wanted to answer their text, but it had been sent over three hours ago, so debated with himself about answering it right that very second. He had no idea if they were on the move or next to their mother where she could hear it ding with a message, if they knew how to turn it to silent or

not.

Though his next thought was that he had two cheeky little allies who were likely going to want to help him in the courting of their mother. Because it sounded to him like they were happy to have him in their lives, and were likely just waiting to meet him when he was allowed to.

He clicked out of the message bank and into the tracking app and blinked at seeing the boy’s icon moving over the northwestern part of lowa. There was no way they could have gotten that far in just over three hours and, as he thought about that, he could only come to one conclusion; they were all on a plane.

Calvin wondered just where they were going. The boys hadn’t said, but he left the answering of the message alone. If that phone was with one of the boys in a carry–on bag, it was likely that Marilyn would hear it chime and if the boys didn’t have their own phones would know it was the one that tracked her wear abouts, drawing unwanted annoyed attention to the boys. He didn’t want her to shut it off when she realised what they’d done either,

Though a part of him really did itch to respond to them, to let his sons know he wanted to talk with them, and he had to contain himself. He knew until the flight either landed or the icon stopped moving altogether.

He returned to his breakfast and moved his eyes to his phone when it rang, and he saw Wil flash on the screen, knew that man had just woken up and likely seen Marilyn was on the move. He answered it, Yes, Wil?

“I just saw the app and Marilyn and the boys are moving.”

“I saw it,” Calvin answered around a mouthful of toast.

“I’m aware of the trip,” Wil stated quite hastily. “She’s going on a writing retreat I was told. Off to the mountains to draw some scenery inspiration for her new book.”

“Flying by the look of it,” Calvin mused unconcerned as he clicked back into the app, and it had already gone from lowa to the southeastern border of South Dakota.

“Yes, I was informed, so she hasn’t breached her end of the contract,” Wil told him.

“Alright, are you trying to placate me Wil? Thinking I will go off the rails about seeing this?” Calvin asked. He wasn’t going to, for all he knew, she could be on another book tour, or something book–related, a writers‘ convention, and as Wil had told him, it was work–related. Her travel was always likely going to be very different to his, because her world was very different. He had no idea what she did or where she went, any given day, week or month of the year.

Are you going to?” Wil asked right back and Calvin could hear the worry in his voice.

“No, she took the phone with her,” he smiled to himself. “Isn’t trying to hide where she’s off to,he stated, although he knew she had no idea, but if he played that card, Wil would leave it alone as long as he did himself.

Though the twins taking it in secret meant that Marilyn was traveling about the country and didn’t nt him to know about it. That she thought that phone was still at her home in Virginia, and so he wouldn’t now she was away with the boys. That was interesting to him, he now realised.

“If she hadn’t,Wil stated.

“I’d not know about it at all,” Calvin stated simply. “I’m not tracking her or spying on her, I want to show her l can be trusted. You also would know anyway, she told you…” he thought about that for a moment. “Why only you, and you didn’t tell me?” he asked Wil now, as he wondered if something else was going on around him.

“The contract states she only has to tell one of us, unless going out of the country, and she’s not. I took it as she told me and not you, didn’t want me to tell you. The contract doesn’t state that I have to tell you. I’m also trying to build trust with her.” Wil informed him all lawyer in that statement.

*When the gring” Calven acked now
