Chapter 49 

“Because I 

“Because I’ve been trying to have a baby recently! Jenna replied shyly. 

Kamryn didn’t respond. 

“It would be bad if I caught a cold these days.” 

As she spoke, her tone was tinged with some self–blame. “Oh, I didn’t know they would find you as the body double, ‘cause you resigned the day before yesterday, didn’t you? I thought something happened to your family, so… Oh, I didn’t mean to blame you, but you could’ve just told me if you needed money. I can sponsor you so you don’t have to take jobs like this.” 

Jenna slowly rose and said in the most innocent tone in the world, “I guess it’s just fate that you ended up being my body double! Oh, poor thing. Look at you, shivering in the cold water!” 

Then she walked away while chatting with the assistant director. 

Kamryn remained in the water, not daring to get up. 

No one handed her a blanket or anything, so she looked basically naked when she was drenched with only a piece of underwear stuck to her body. 

Jenna must have done this on purpose. 

The whole crew must have listened to her. 

However, Kamryn would never yield, never! 

Earlier, she had her suspicions, but after seeing Jenna and hearing her talk, Kamryn was sure that she had teamed up with Dante to target her. 

She had been worried that her resistance would cause trouble for Dante, but never had she expected to be betrayed by someone she trusted 

Therefore, there she was, soaked in the cold water without making a sound. No matter who persuaded her, she ignored them. Though trembling all over, she curled up in a corner, huddling without moving a muscle. 

The stalemate lasted from morning to afternoon. 

Then, even the director couldn’t sit still. 

They had rented the place and put huge effort into building the set. One more day of delay meant more money would be wasted. 

Moreover, they needed to pay the actors. 

No one was going to make up for the loss if they delayed the shoot because of a mere extra, 

The director became livid but didn’t dare to offend Jenna so he decided to vent all his anger on Kamryn instead. 

“Is she trying to get on my nerves by refusing to shoot? Okay, if she wants to stay in the water, let it be. Hey, get me a cart of ice cubes and dump them all into the pool. Let’s see how long she’ll last then!” 

The crew couldn’t bear it either. “Sir, I don’t think that’d be okay. She’s just a little girl. Wouldn’t she get hurt like that?” 

“Oh, c’mon! She’s just an extra. What could she possibly do about us!” 

The crew member could only do as told. 

A best girl who was taking care of Kamryn’s clothes and stuff couldn’t stand it anymore. 

She could tell clearly that the entire crew was helping Jenna target the body double. They obviously made an effort to 

make things difficult for Kamryn. 

Hence, she tiptoed to the poolside and kindly informed Kamryn, “Hey, the director asked someone to get ice cubes to dump them in the water. Do you want to give in? You’ll get nothing out of it in this deadlock” 

Kamryn looked up, her lips purple from the cold. “Can you do, do me a favor?”

“Give me… give me my phone. 

“Where’s your phone!* 

“It’s in the left pocket of my coat 

The girl fumbled through Kamryn’s clothes and finally got her hands on an old model phone. She looked at the scratched edges of the phone and then at Kamryn and suddenly felt sorry 

“Here’s your phone!” 

Thank you.. 

Kamryn thanked from the bottom of her heart. 

She clasped the phone with both hands and managed to dial a number. It was only after two rings that someone answered. As she drew her phone to her ear, she heard a deep and warm voice. 

“Hello?” 

That simple word broke her down in tears 

She was choking on her tears as she couldn’t utter a coherent sentence. “I’m sorry… I. I really had no choice but to call you. Help… help me.. 

The man on the phone immediately became tense. “Where are you?” 

She sounded really shattered. 

He felt really worried. 

Kamryn told him an address as tears trickled down her face. 

Ill be right there. Don’t hang up.” 

“Okay…” 

Grasping at straws, Kamryn didn’t hang up. She could hear Charlie leaving the hospital, the nurse asking about him, him starting a car, and his car racing all the way.. 

He called her name from time to time, but she gradually lost her strength. 

So hopeless. 

She had never felt so hopeless before. 

For quite a long time, she found that in that icy world, the more she struggled, the deeper she sank, just like the world was a swamp in the first place. 

“Splash… 

There seemed to be many ice cubes dumped into the pool. 

The temperature was getting lower.
