If there's one thing that would never betray me, it's my skills.
And the money in my bank account.
Meanwhile, Chester turned into a frequent flyer, constantly traveling between New York and Lyon just to see me.
Distance didn't keep me out of the loop, though.
Gossip always found its way to me.
A friend called one day, her voice dripping with barely contained excitement.
"Alyssa, you won't believe this-Elliot got his legs broken. He's in a wheelchair. For life."
Oh.
"And his company? Totally bankrupt."
Turns out, after I left, Nova thought she'd won. With me gone, there was nothing standing in her way.
Except-
After all, Elliot had sworn up and down that he loved Nova-he just couldn't marry her because he had a "responsibility" to me.
Well, now that his so-called responsibility was gone, shouldn't he be overjoyed to make her his wife?
But instead, he just looked at her like she was an idiot and scoffed.
"You actually believed all that crap I said to keep you happy?"
Nova's face crumpled. She lunged at him, hitting his chest with weak, desperate fists.
"You really want our baby to be a bastard?" she sobbed.
Elliot shoved her off him like she was nothing.
"If you don't like it, get rid of it."
Nova collapsed onto the floor, crying so hard she could barely breathe.
Elliot didn't even flinch.
"Stay out of my business," he said coldly.
"And don't ask questions. When I get married, it's gonna be to someone who can actually help me."
Maybe it was karma catching up to him, but Elliot's company started spiraling fast.
Contracts with long-time business partners expired, and none of them renewed.
Cash flow was a nightmare. He was desperate for investors.
Then, right when he was drowning, he managed to reel in a rich investment banker-a woman.
Elliot turned on the charm, playing her like a fiddle, and soon enough, they were planning a wedding.
When Nova found out, she lost it.
She stormed into the investor's office, huge pregnant belly on full display, and dropped to her knees, sobbing.
"Please, I'm begging you-have mercy on my child."
"Let Elliot come back to us. My baby can't grow up without a father!"
The investor didn't say anything right away.
