Chapter 325
Jacob stared at the door that had just slammed shut, nearly bursting into tears. “Did I say something wrong, Daddy?” He looked up at Brian with
wounded eyes.
“No, Jake, you said something wonderful. Mommy needs a moment to process everything arm, his voice gentle and reassuring.
she’s not mad at you.” Brian scooped Jarob up with sha
“Really?” Jacob’s tone carried doubt.
“Of course! Jake was so sincere that Mommy’s probably just overwhelmed with emotion. Why would she be angry with you? Besides, even though Mommy isn’t planning to come with us, she’s still worried about you, right?”
Brian glanced at the closed door as he spoke, opening his mouth as if to say more, but ultimately remained silent and carried Jake away
Behind the door, Jessica listened to their footsteps fading down the hallway, then buried her face in her hands with a defeated sigh.
She shouldn’t have been so cold now–it was just Jacob’s heartfelt gesture. But she couldn’t help herself.
When Jessica realized she had been moved by Jacob’s words, her first reaction wasn’t joy but terror.
She was actually starting to believe Brian and Jacob again. She shouldn’t let this happen.
Jessica muttered, “Jessica, have you forgotten everything you learned before? But people can change, right? What if Jake realizes his mistakes and actually changes?”
She asked herself, “Can I ignore it and keep pushing him away until he gives up completely and grows distant, like in my dream? Jessica, is that really what you want?
“But even if it’s not what I want, so what? Just because he says he’s sorry doesn’t mean I can let go of all that resentment and accept them back like nothing happened.”
She let out a bitter laugh. “Don’t forget–Madeline is still pregnant, still living in that villa Brian bought her. Jessica, if you forgive them, do you really want to spend the rest of your life playing house politics with Madeline in the Atkinson family?”
“No!” Jessica shook her head frantically. She couldn’t accept it–returning to the Atkinson family, giving up her career, trapping herself in domestic life, spending every day revolving around children, and competing with the other woman for attention.
That version of herself wasn’t who she truly was.
She had already lost herself once for Brian and Jacob, and she refused to lose herself a second time.
Jessica’s breathing grew heavy as she swept all the breakfast Brian had brought into the trash can.
Her hands trembled uncontrollably after throwing everything away. Still, she stared at the discarded breakfast with bloodshot eyes, her voice resolute. “I won’t accept this!”
She would never lose herself for anyone again–she had her own life to live, and no one would trap her anymore.
Brian had no idea what Jessica was thinking as he returned to the car with Jacob and immediately instructed Jackson to prepare a travel guide for family–friendly tourist destinations.
“Don’t be sad anymore, buddy–Dad will take you traveling this weekend,” he said.
