Chapter 332
Madeline jerked to the side, waiting until the car disappeared into the distance before daring to turn around.
She stared hard at the vehicle, now just a shadow in the distance.
Madeline was sure she hadn’t been mistaken–that was Brian’s car, the one he drove most often. The license plate was identical to his. There was not fooling herself about this.
She frowned. “But why would Brian’s car be in this neighborhood? Did he really win Jessica back? Are they living together now? No way! I can’t accept it.
Madeline dug her nails into her palms, gritted her teeth, and followed. She had to know the truth, even if it killed her.
Her pursuit led her to watch Brian’s car pull up in front of Jessica’s apartment building. Brian stepped out first, the door opened, then walked around to open the back door, and lifted Jacob out of the car.
Madeline’s eyes widened in disbelief. The shock was so overwhelming that she didn’t even notice her nails had drawn blood from her palms.
There was no denying it now.
Brian had gotten back together with Jessica, and they lived together.
‘So that’s why Jessica’s been ignoring me lately,‘ Madeline thought. ‘She thinks she’s won and doesn’t need to bother with a loser like me anymore. Fine.
Just fine!‘
Madeline shot one last venomous glare at Jessica’s floor, then turned and stormed off. She wouldn’t give up. ‘Jessica, we have a long road ahead of us.
I’ll show you?
Brian moved into the apartment across from Jessica’s with Jacob. Once they got settled, he immediately called Jackson to check on the investigation.
“Boss, we caught two of them,” Jackson said.
“Two?” Brian’s brow furrowed.
Jackson nodded. “Yeah, I brought in some tracking experts. They used the nearby surveillance footage and their connections to catch these two guys.
“But when we questioned them, both said someone paid them to do it. Neither one saw the person behind it all. They knew whoever it was paid well, and always in cash.”
Brian’s expression grew darker with each word. “That’s it? No other leads?”
Jackson said, “Actually, there are more. The experts said these two aren’t the whole crew. Looking at the surveillance, different people dropped stuff at your wife’s door each time.
“We’re talking about maybe a dozen people being involved. They’re tracking down the rest as fast as they can. But based on what these two told us, the .chances of finding the mastermind are slim.”
Jackson finished, adding, “Oh, these two gave us one vague lead. They said the person who contacted them looked like a woman based on build, and both used voice changers. Neither could be completely sure of the person’s gender, but they think it was the same person.”
Brian didn’t hesitate. “Can’t be sure? Then bring in everyone who handled the packages. Get them face–to–face to compare notes, and bring a profiler to sketch whoever hired them.”
“Yes, sir.” Jackson left immediately and passed along Brian’s new orders.
The next morning, Brian grabbed breakfast and headed out with Jacob to bring food to Jessi. Despite the summer heat, they spotted someone standing.
Chapter 332
by the mailboxes, dressed in a heavy coat and sun hat.
The person heard them coming, glanced back, then bolted with what looked like an envelope in hand.
“Don’t move!” Brian took off after them without thinking.
Sharp–eyed Jacob chased after her, shouting as he ran. “Dad, the envelope in her hand is dripping blood!”
When those words left his mouth, the figure ahead ran faster, disappearing into the fire exit in the blink of an eye and slamming the door shut tight.
Brian was a step too slow. By the time he pushed open the door, the stairwell was empty.
He frowned and headed down to the next floor, but found no one there either.
Meanwhile, Madeline pressed herself into the shadows at the corner of the stairwell below, trying to control her breathing
Once she was sure Brian had gone upstairs, she tiptoed down another floor, hit the elevator button, and headed straight to the basement. That was
close. She’d almost been caught.
She’d only remembered this morning over breakfast that she’d hired someone to deliver a blood–stained letter to Jessica today. The letter contained
some obvious accusations.
Now that Brian and Jessica were living together, if Brian saw that letter and Jessica started stirring up trouble, they’d probably trace it back to her.
When she thought of this, her first instinct was to call the person she’d hired.
But then she remembered they’d never exchanged contact information, and she’d already deleted the anonymous account she’d used to post the job
online.
She had no choice but to risk coming here herself.
If the person hadn’t delivered it yet, that would be perfect. And if they had, she could grab it before Brian found it.
Just her luck, she’d barely gotten the mailbox open and pulled out the envelope when Brian walked out from across the hall.
Thank God she reacted fast enough, or she would’ve been caught red–handed.
That was way too close for comfort.
Sitting in the taxi, Madeline’s heart raced from the near miss.
If Brian had discovered she was behind all this scheming, she wouldn’t have gotten off so easily this time. Hell, she might’ve even ended up helping Brian and Jessica get back together.
The thought alone made her sick.
Meanwhile, back at the apartment, Brian was even more furious than she was. He’d lost the intruder, and the security footage was useless.
“Sir, whoever it was had themselves completely covered up. All we can tell from the body shape is that it was a woman,” Jackson said helplessly
Brian’s face was stone cold, his mood beyond terrible.
