I was rummaging through my locker when I briefly heard someone whisper my name. Peeking over to the left of me was Holly Drew and two other cheerleader friends of hers. I figured there was no way they’d be talking about me and went about my business once more.

When I heard “Cole” for the second time, I closed my locker and looked at them dead in the faces. They looked back at me and then at Holly, giggling before leaving her alone.

“Hey Cole!” she said brightly. I squinted at her suspiciously. It was the first time she had ever spoken to me in my life and we were seniors…

“Uh..hey?” I hoisted up my backpack and continued to stare at her with a confused look on my face.

She took a few steps toward me and leaned against the lockers. “You’re in Mr. Gordon’s English Lit class, 3rd period right?”

I nodded slowly, taking in her oddly friendly smile, strawberry blonde hair, and stereotypical cheerleader outfit. She could easily play the hot girl in one of those corny MTV movies.

“I thought we had that class together! You do pretty well in that subject, don’t you? I mean, you always answer questions and do really well on the assignments.”

I chuckled, nodding again. “Yea, well English lit is kind of my jam. A-and Mr. Gordon’s really nice.”

“Yea he is! I mean, he’s nice in class but not so nice when it comes to grading exams, you know?”

“Well, he tends to look for critical analysis over everything else. Are you having trouble in that class? If so, I’m sorry to hear that.”

“Yea it’s those darn essay tests that always get me. I feel like my style of writing is not up to his standards at all. That’s actually why I wanted to chat with you and see if you wouldn’t mind tutoring me for like an hour or something…after school?”

I tried not to blush at the request. It’s not every day that hot girls like Holly Drew were approaching me, asking for my time.

“Oh, yeah for sure! Would you want to just meet in the library after 9th?” I really hoped that didn’t come off as too eager.

“Libraries give me anxiety for some reason. How about we just study at your place? If that’s cool of course…”

I hesitated for a second before affirming. My house was probably nothing like hers- it was small and in a dingy neighborhood. I had two older siblings who were luckily out all the time and an annoying step-dad, Carl who mainly just hung out in front of the tv. I wasn’t sure if I wanted her to see where I lived, but I knew it would be stupid to turn down the chance to have Holly Drew in my house….maybe even in my room.

“Yea, that would be uh fine. Let’s meet here when school’s over and I’ll drive us.”

“Perfect! Oh, thank you so much, Cole.” And to my surprise she stood on her tip-toes and pecked me on the cheek, thankfully taking off before she could see my whole face go red…

This was turning out to be one of the most eventful afternoons I’ve had in a while. Holly and I grabbed slushies after school and were actually having a good time in each other’s company, just driving down the highway with the windows down and the speakers up. A song by a country artist we both loved came on and we were laughing at each other, trying to remember the lyrics while singing off-key simultaneously.

What she didn’t realize is that the writing style couldn’t be dramatically improved overnight or through one tutoring session. Secretly, I was happy about this of course because it potentially meant spending more time with Holly Drew. She was a surprisingly cool and sweet person, underneath that popular girl facade. She seemed nothing like the other girls she tended to hang with…

We pulled up to my house after about 15 minutes on the road. I peeked out the corner of my eye to gauge Holly’s impression of our place- but she seemed to have no reaction whatsoever and loudly slurped up the last dregs of her slushie before hopping out my truck.

I unlocked the front door letting her in. “Gosh, that slush was too dang good but now I gotta pee like a racehorse.” I laughed and pointed her towards the bathroom, then headed to the kitchen myself to layout my textbooks…

Carl’s POV

I was damn-near hollerin’ at the tv screen as I watched my favorite baseball player strike out for the 3rd time this game. God damn pansy today…I muttered, crushing up my empty beer can, immediately thirsty for another one.

I heard a car door slam out in the driveway and peered through the window. It was Cole and a girl- to my surprise. She was a cute blonde who looked way out of his league. I eyed them suspiciously as they came up the porch.

I got up and walked into the kitchen where I saw Cole parked at the table, pulling books out. He barely mumbled a hello out to me and I nodded in return, wondering where his lady friend was at. Then an idea hit me...
