“Alright boys, good hustle today! We are on our way to being the best rodeo riders the Midwest has ever seen in all its history. Go home, get some rest and come back tomorrow ready to roll.”

The guys started dispersing out the room, and I did my best to smile and nod at each one that passed…but I had my eye on a peculiar lookin’ fella- Jensen- who was trying to sneak out unnoticed.

“Hey, uh...Jensen is it? Can I talk to you for a second pal?”

I had never really gotten up close and personal with this ‘Jensen’ kid. He was new to the team and tended to lay low and blend in. Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve ever seen him come out of the shower or be in the locker room at the same time as the rest of the gang.

He looked over at me hesitantly and walked over, keeping a distance. I bridged the gap, telling him I wasn’t going to bite his head off. He sighed and came a little closer, and I could see that ‘his’ face was oddly feminine under that big old cowboy hat. His small mouth, pinched nose, and big brown eyes.

What the hell…?

“Jensen, you can remove your hat boy. It’s just you and me here.”

He was reluctant, again, and my curiosity got the best of me. I reached out and plucked his hat off, and out came tumbling waves of long hair.

I crossed my arms and squinted at the girl standing in front of me. “Now what do we have here?” I asked incredulously, sizing the trickster up.

“Look, sir, I’m sorry. I know the league is boys only b-but I’m a damn good horse rider, just as good as the other guys! Please let me stay on the team at least until the end of the season.”

“What’s your name, girl?” I asked, ignoring her questions. I was only a few years older than the rest of the team, so it colored me funny to be called a ‘sir.’

She sighed, looking down. “Jenny Oslin.”

“Look up at me when you’re answering a question,” I said, turning her chin up. “At least have the respect to look me in the eyes after fooling me all these weeks. It’s a boys-only league because the sport is dangerous. My ass would be in hot water if you got hurt, ain’t you think about that?”

She gave no answer and just continued to avoid eye contact. “You want me to go for good then?” She asked, with a challenging glint in her eye.

Now that I was getting a good look at her, I found her to be a pretty girl. Why the hell would she want to play some rough, manly sport like this?
