"Hey Mandy, a few of us are ditching Mr. Milkobitch's class to get drinks at Dumfrey's. You in?"

I nearly jumped up from the sudden loud voice and peeked behind my locker door to see Tana and her two sidekicks- the three most popular girls in school standing there looking at me. She blew a large bubble and crossed her arms waiting for my answer.

"Uh, Dumfrey's...the bar?"

Tana laughed and rolled her heavily lined eyes. "Well duh. We hang out there all the time! You in or not?"

We were only seniors in high school. None of us were 21 and legally couldn't even drink so the proposition confused me. I pushed up my glasses and held my books tightly to my chest. "I can't uh - drink."

The three of them laughed again loudly, even keeling over. They must have thought I was joking or something. "I knew you were a funny girl! Hey no worries okay, just show your fake id if anyone asks. We do that and get away with it all the time. Now come on!" Tana wrapped her arm around my shoulder and plucked my glasses off, slipping them into her jacket pocket. "You look way better without them anyway."

I found my feet moving along with theirs but internally I was frozen with fear. The girls assumed I had a fake id in my possession when I had never even seen one in my entire life. I was of course mentally cursing myself but tried to look and remain cool. It wasn't every day that Tana and her crew invited just anyone to hang.

"Let's walk. It's only a few blocks down that way." Tana led the way and the rest of us followed close behind. I fell back a little to observe their group dynamic which was mostly Tana bossing her "friends" around as they fought for her attention. I never got why people bothered with such vapid relationships but then again I was the new girl in town and knew nothing about high school life in Tennessee having grown up at a small base in Antarctica.

"So what's the North Pole like?" Betsy, one of the sidekicks asked. She flicked her stringy bangs to the side and pulled out a pack of cigarettes, offering me one.

I shook my head and laughed nervously. "Well, actually I grew up on the South Pole in a very small community in the base of the Transantarctic Mountains. My parents are geologists and were stationed there for 8 years, raising me and homeschooling me there.

"Damn, that's pretty fucking crazy. Isn't it all cold and shit? Did you see polar bears?"

"It's cold all the time since there is virtually no direct sunlight. Antarctica is basically just land surrounded by an ocean. It's dry and there are lots of mountains. The bears mostly live in the Arctic but we do have tons of penguins."
