“I’m guessing the mother is not worth knowing?"
I opened my mouth to reply before the actual meaning of his words hit me. He meant the mother was from a powerful clan or pack.
When I didn't answer, he lifted his glass and drank to the last drop. Then he said,

At 3:30 PM, I'd just come out of a meeting. My phone buzzed as the driver cut into the traffic. It was the fiance.
“Hey, Cassie.”
"I can’t make dinner tonight, alpha. I might be coming down with something. A cold, I think."
I nearly cried from relief. "Aww... I'm sorry to hear that."
