Chapter 349 Decades Ago
Mateja’s p.o.v.
I am not sure how to feel about all of this, and no, I’m not talking about betraying my brother Lucas or my Mother.
I am talking about my annoying Mountain Lion, who keeps pointing out how well Commander Amir looks. It is clear to see that he spends most of his time outside in nothing but a shirt and shorts.
It is clear that he trains just about every day; the shirt he is wearing is strained across the muscles of his arms. Unlike myself, his tan shows that he spends most of his time outside. I don’t have much of a tan left after being forced to stay indoors for many years.
I watch the others as they start packing up everything that they brought with them for this investigation; the emptier the room becomes, the more I realize I have not made a solid plan on what to do after escaping the mansion.
I don’t know anything about my mother’s family or that of my father, So I need to figure out where to go from here.
“Commander Amir can help us out; maybe he knows a place where we can go and be safe from Lucas and his friends.” Echo says in my head.
Echo is probably right; Commander Amir might be able to help us find a place to live. A place far away from my Mother and Lucas.
The only problem I have is that I don’t know how to ask because the last time I asked anyone for help, I made the mistake of trusting the wrong person, and that is why Lucas always made sure that the nutrition I got was just enough to keep me alive. I never understood why Lucas was so hell-bent on keeping me close, but I finally got an answer to that question.
He didn’t need me to have a strong other half if he was going to use me as a dead decoy.
The more I think about his plans, the more I start to understand events from the past. The guards around the mansion and the lack of any communication with the outside world, it is all making sense.
I was never meant to survive long enough to build a life of my own; I doubt anyone remembered me because the last time anyone saw me was when we still had a happy family.
“We did survive, and we will build a life of our own. It doesn't mean we have to go looking for any living relatives right now. We can do that once we have settled down, and in order for us to settle down, we need to find a place to live. Just ask Commander Amir if he can help us find a temporary home.” Echo says.
“What’s going on in that mind of yours, Mateja?” Commander Amir asks, and as I look up, I realize that they have already packed up everything and that they are waiting for me.
