That night, Lisette and the dog Silas brought ended up sleeping in the same room.

Lisette didn’t notice anything odd about the dog. So, when she finally got into bed, she let out a sigh of relief, thinking that Silas seemed like a decent guy, definitely not the kind who’d treat her the way she’d once treated Calliope.

Of course, what she didn’t know was that Silas would do absolutely anything for Calliope.

Anyone who hurt Calliope? Silas had no plans to let them off the hook. In fact, he’d only make things worse for them.

After living with Silas for a while, Calliope had gotten to know his personality pretty well. So she figured, since Silas had gone out of his way to bring Lisette a dog, it probably wasn’t as simple as it seemed.

Later that evening, while they were both in their room, Calliope couldn’t help but ask, “Is there something weird about that dog?”

“The dog?” Silas flashed a mysterious grin. “Oh, there’s definitely something up with that dog.”

“Huh?” Calliope had suspected it, but she hadn’t really believed it was true. “You’re serious?”

“Dead serious. But you can’t really tell just by looking at it.”

No matter how hard Calliope tried, she couldn’t see anything off about the dog. Still, if Silas said so, he probably wasn’t lying to her.

“Of course you can’t see anything,” Silas said, shaking his head. “If you could, someone like Lisette would’ve found a hundred ways to refuse. She’s not the type to agree to anything unless she has a good reason.”

Calliope nodded. “Yeah, she’s not easy to convince.”

“That’s why I had to be a little sneaky.” Silas chuckled, ruffling Calliope’s hair. “You’ll see what I mean in the morning.”
