“You can only call yourself a real father if you’ve actually done what a real dad does. Otherwise, what kind of father are you supposed to be?” Silas let out a cold laugh. “Have you ever done a single decent thing in your life?”
“So what if I haven’t? I gave you life, didn’t I?” Oliver shot back, his voice icy. “The only reason you’re here is because of me. Without me, you wouldn’t even be alive.”
“Yeah, but you brought me into this world and then left me to fend for myself. If it hadn’t been you, I probably would’ve had a much better shot at happiness.”
Silas’ tone was sharp as a knife. “Your ‘son’ died the day you tried to hunt him down.”
“But the truth is, you didn’t die. You made it out just fine. Do you know why that is?” Oliver said, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. “Because you’re my son. You’ve inherited all my best qualities. That’s why you’ve survived and even thrived. All that good DNA? You got it from me!”
Silas looked at Oliver with pure disgust. He’d seen shameless people before, but never anyone quite this shameless. He’d underestimated just how thick Oliver’s skin really was.
“Since you’re my son, it only makes sense for you to come back to me and do what I say.” Oliver continued, “You’ve divorced that Calliope or whatever her name is. Come back home. Marry Blythe.”
“What?” Silas stared at Oliver like he’d lost his mind. “Are you out of your damn mind?”
“I’m not crazy. This is what’s best for you. I know you’re capable, Silas, but if you had everything I have, you’d be even stronger. Doesn’t every man want to be as powerful as he can?”
Oliver fixed his gaze on Silas, trying to coax him like a salesman pitching a too-good-to-be-true deal. “I’d never hurt you. I am your father, after all.”
