James
At first James thought he misheard her.
Then he thought he misunderstood.
But there could be no doubt now – not the way Isabel was looking at him, with big eyes full of hope, anticipation, and just a little fear. Hearing the guarded she-wolf profess her love sent his heart soaring, until it was pounding violently against his ribcage as it accelerated to a gallop. Isabel’s skin was flushed bright pink, and she couldn’t truly look him in the eye. Her gaze kept flitting up and down, almost as if she thought James might reject her. It was adorable and infuriating all at once. Didn’t she realize how crazy he was about her?
At the same time, he didn’t want to push her past her limits. It was one thing to think she was ready, and another to truly take such a momentous step. James tangled one large hand in Isabel’s hair, tugging her face up to his, “Did you think I would refuse you, sweetheart?” He inquired, stroking her sharp jaw with the pad of his thumb. “Surely you realize how hopelessly I’m in love with you, Isabel.”
She shrugged, sniffling harder now. “I don’t know.”
“Oh my sweet mate.” He breathed, cuddling her to his chest. “I have lost my damn mind for loving you, and it means the world to me that you feel the same way. I’ve just been trying to be patient.”
“I don’t want you to be patient anymore.” Isabel grumbled, all wolf as her eyes flashed neon blue. James flashed his fangs and growled quietly, until the animal ferocity faded from Isabel’s countenance, “I think I need to be pushed.” She added with a small pout. “My wolf has been begging me to give into you for weeks, and I’ve been resisting her. I appreciate you trying to give me time, but I can’t bring myself to do it on my own. I...I need help taking this final step.” Isabel admitted, her knees feeling like absolute jelly.
James captured her lips with his own, knowing exactly what she meant. Loving Isabel had been an exercise in endurance, self-discipline and absolute masochism. “I appreciate that, baby.” He purred, kissing her cheek. “And I’m so proud of you for acknowledging it and asking for help, but there’s no rush.” He told her, mostly just to see how she would react. “It’s enough to know how you feel, and that you’re ready to take that step. We can start with getting more intimate and see how you feel.”
Isabel didn’t disappoint the soldier’s wolf, shooting him a fierce scowl and digging her little feet into the ground. “I don’t just mean that I want you to rut me, James.” Isabel corrected him in a sultry tone, peeking up at him from beneath her lashes and watching as her words sunk in. “I mean I want you to truly claim me.” She clarified, swiping her little pink tongue over the seam of her lips. Her words were getting softer and more suggestive by the second, and it was all James could do to keep his wolf in control. “I need you to fill me with your big, hard cock, and rut me until I’m ruined for any other wolf. I need you to sink your sharp fangs into my –
“Enough!” James’ blood was well past the boiling point now, and though he wanted nothing more than to cart her off to bed this instant, he couldn’t resist kissing her again either. He growled, dragging her mouth to his and Isabel immediately opened for his tongue, her slight body shifting restlessly against his. They indulged each other for a few long, breathless minutes, before James finally regained control of his senses. “There’s something I have to tell you, before we go any further.” He ground out, looking irate with his own better judgment.
Isabel winced, fighting back a shiver of dread. She’d been worried about this… about what would happen to her relationship with James once the war truly got underway. She’d also seen the way all the Alpha’s were muttering and talking today, making plans and whispering strategies. And now with James looking down at her, his brow furrowed with regret… it wasn’t hard to guess what he was about to say.
“You’re going with Dominic into battle, aren’t you?” She stated, her mouth suddenly feeling very try.
“He’s asked me to be his second in command while he sends Roger off on some other mission.” James confirmed, trying to read Isabel’s shuttered features. “The refugees won’t need me to ferry them away every day, because we’ll be between them and the threat.” He sighed heavily. “It will be a relief.”
Isabel nodded, her eyes burning. “He’d be a fool to go without you.”
