"Why keep her? To continue causing trouble in our village?"
"Our village is being developed, surely because it's a jinx! A disaster brought upon us!"
These village women were all crazy about Winter. Ever since she came to their village, their husbands have been following her like they were under a spell, constantly going home and praising Winter for being so beautiful.
Whichever of them listened, they all felt very uncomfortable.
This time they finally got Winter's red-handed.
The morning sun shone on the surface of the water, creating sparkling ripples.
Early in the morning, the village was not calm.
Winter was put into a cage.
"Let's go, carry it away."
None of the men in their family dared to speak up, although they felt a little guilty watching Winter's embarrassed appearance.
But... not a single person spoke up.
Several scratch marks were on Winter's beautiful face, and her cheap maternity clothes were torn and tattered, revealing her fair skin, making her look especially alluring.
She always protected her belly, fearing that the unborn child would be harmed.
These women ended up hitting her anyway, but none of them hit her stomach.
She held her belly, sitting in the cage and looking at these villagers with an expressionless face.
She felt a little anxious as she didn't want to die.
What if the child was drowned in this river? That was her only tie with Clark in this world.
Her eyes turned red with sadness, "I really didn't have an affair with Devyn. Why don't you listen to my explanation?"
"At this point, you still won't admit it?!" Phoebe became angry and pinched her face. Her grip was strong, as she did farm work every day and had a lot of strength.
"You bitch! Our village kindly took you in, and yet you still seduced my man!" Phoebe slapped her across the face once again and exclaimed, "We should never have taken you in to begin with."
"That's it. No more talking. Just drown her in the water," another woman said before carrying the cage.
Winter panicked and struggled to push open the door of the cage. "Let me out! This is murder, it's illegal!"
"You ignorant village women," she yelled.
As the cage got closer and closer to the river, suddenly a figure came running towards them. "Winter! Winter!" It was Rey.
"Winter, save me!" She screamed as if she had seen a life-saving straw.
"Rey, don't blame us for not warning you. She's just a slut who seduced my man last night," Phoebe blocked Rey's way and shouted loudly.
"It's impossible. Winter isn't that kind of woman, especially since she's about to give birth!" Rey didn't believe Phoebe at all.
"I know you want her as your wife, but she is a bitch who will only deceive you." Phoebe continued to slander Winter's reputation. "If she were really a good woman, would she be living here alone with such a big belly? I think she must be one of those mistresses carrying an illegitimate child."
"Don't talk about her like that!" Rey became angry and pushed Phoebe away before rushing towards Winter.
"What do you mean by this? Pushing my woman?" Devyn rushed over to grab hold of Rey. "She seduced me last night insisting on talking with me while claiming that couldn't sleep."
Rey was stunned; he looked at Devyn in shock. "Is it true?"
"Can I lie to you?" Devyn said stubbornly; he couldn't admit his own dirty behavior when things had come this far.
Winter was shaking with anger. "He's lying about everything; he's framing me!" But no one believed her anymore.
She could only put her last hope on Rey. "Rey, I didn't do anything wrong; please believe me."
"Rey, we're buddies," Devyn said painfully."We've known each other for half our lives so why wouldn't you trust what I say? Last night I made mistakes because I drank too much but once we got back up there..."
Winter closed her eyes tightly; at this point there was nothing left for her to say.
There had been great pity in Rey's eyes when looking at Winter but now he didn't know whom or what should be trusted anymore.
He wanted to believe in Winter but what Devyn and Phoebe said seemed so convincing after all.
Could it really be true that Winter wasn't faithful? Maybe Phoebe wasn't wrong either. If she were really such an honorable woman, why would someone like herself end up pregnant living alone in their village anyway?
After a while, he angrily said to Winter, "I can't believe how much I liked you and helped you all the time. Winter, you've disappointed me so much."
Winter opened her mouth but felt a huge sense of powerlessness welling up inside her. She felt as small and insignificant as an ant.
She sat in the pigsty with a heart as dead as ashes, feeling the river water slowly creeping up past her knees towards her neck.
After waiting for a while, the rope tied to the cage began to shake. Jasper immediately joined two other men who stayed behind and pulled hard outside.
Someone below untied the stones attached to the cage so it became easier to pull up. But it was still difficult because of resistance from water.
When they finally pulled up the cage after about ten minutes, none of those villagers dared move because these people looked tough enough not to mess with them.
They were not fools either; they heard that someone wanted to buy their village but rarely saw anyone coming here. Now this group of strangers suddenly appeared; who knew if they were big bosses or something?
At this moment, their village chief ran over with his head nodding and bowing: "Mr. Maskelyne, Miss Andrews! What brings you here?"
"We've never seen anyone immersed in a cage before so we came over for a look," Sylvia said coldly as she walked towards them by riverbank.
"The key." Jasper swept these villagers coldly without any response from any one of them after waiting for some time impatiently: "Don't force me."
Phoebe reluctantly took out her keys then Sylvia saw clearly through distance that there was pregnant woman inside with her belly bulging indicating she would give birth soon!
These crazy villagers were too cruel even trying drowning pregnant women!
She quickened her pace until she saw Jasper's team carrying Winter out of that cage when she recognized Winter's face at once despite being beaten black-and-blue on her face!
"Winter?"
Jasper heard Sylvia's voice then looked at Winter's face immediately where he could still recognize who she was despite bruises on her face. "What is Winter doing here?"
Sylvia shook her head. "Saving people comes first."
The most important thing when rescuing someone drowning is making sure he/she spits out water first which means there might be hope since breathing remained weak but present!
A person who has been drowning must first expel the water; that's the most critical step.
Sylvia knelt beside Winter, checking her breathing. Though it was faint, there was still hope.
She began chest compressions, pressing for a while. "Cough..."
Winter's head tilted, and she coughed violently, expelling several mouthfuls of river water.
After she had coughed up enough to soak the area by the river, she slowly opened her eyes.
"I'm still alive?" Winter looked around, her head spinning, as she gazed at the blue sky above.
