The familiar voice shattered my resolve.

I broke down completely, sobs wracking my body.

"Liam..."

"Liam Johnson?"

Ethan's voice was laced with disdain.

He cocked his head, eyes locking onto his older half-brother—the same brother who had spent years in St. Mary's Orphanage after being cast aside by their father.

"You really came back? Didn't think you had the guts."

"What, not afraid someone's gonna finish the job and send you back to the hospital?"

"This is between me and Emily—stay out of it."

"Emily, get over here."

But to his shock, I didn't move.

In fact, I instinctively stepped further behind Liam.

"Oh. Now it all makes sense."

Ethan let out a hollow laugh.

"My wife, and my dear brother. Together. How poetic."

He scoffed, his expression hardening into something cold and cruel.

"Emily, isn't this what you wanted?"

He spread his arms wide, mocking.

"Just don't come crawling back."

When the red-stamped divorce decree was finally in our hands, I let out a breath I hadn't realized I was holding.

"Emily, you do realize Liam isn't in line for the Johnson fortune, right?"

Ethan's voice was slick with condescension.

"You couldn't have me, so you settled for the next best thing? Really?"
