I persuaded my brother into the study room after much effort, then looked at Nico's face, which now resembled a color palette, and reluctantly invited him in —I had to do a good job of handling the aftermath and calming things down, as I was really afraid he might call the police.

I dipped a cotton swab in some medicine and carefully applied it to Nico's injuries.

I felt a warmth on my hand as he took hold of it.

I pulled away and continued applying the medicine:

"I'm just apologizing on behalf of my brother. Regardless of anything else, him resorting to violence was wrong. Don't misunderstand."

"He was just upset," Nico said, his expression dejected and his eyes reddening a bit:

"Emily, let's talk. If I say I've actually broken things off cleanly with Violet, would you be willing to give us another chance?"

"Actually, I didn't come to see you today for her sake. When I heard her say you were causing trouble for her because of me, I was actually a bit happy. At least it proves that you care about me. That you're not entirely indifferent about the end of this relationship."

I interrupted him, finding it laughable:

There was no point in saying more. I put away the medicine box:

"I didn't do anything to Violet, whether you believe it or not."

"As for you and me, getting back together is impossible. When I decided to withdraw my feelings for you, it meant the end, with no possibility of return."

Nico leaned back on the sofa, powerless:

"I really want to know how you manage to be so detached. After all, we had a ten-year relationship..."

Seeing his pretense of being deep in love, I found it somewhat amusing and couldn't help voicing my thoughts:

"I also really want to know how you manage to act like a devoted lover in front of me after doing all those things?"
