From the tone of Miranda’s questioning, Jack could almost see a glimpse of his father, Leonard. He wondered how she’d managed all these years alone in Elgerson City 

A child with a smooth life wouldn’t have this kind of drive, nor would she have the network and means to acquire such a large plot of land and breeze through the approvals. 

This little cousin of his was a mystery in so many ways. But rather than digging into the mystery, Jack felt more compassion for what she’d been through, 

He didn’t ask her anything: sometimes, not bringing it up was the best form of comfort. 

Jack’s expression turned serious. “You’re right. The construction is behind schedule, slower than I anticipated. Do you know why?” 

He gave a wry smile before continuing. “We don’t have enough workers. 

“Huh?” She had expected a more complicated issue, but that was it? 

Jack’s company had already moved away from foundational construction work–it was hard 

exposed to the elements, and didn’t bring in much profit. 

So, when they shifted focus to smart home renovation, they abandoned that part of the business entirely But Miranda insisted they handle the foundational work as well. 

Jack understood her reasoning; the foundation was essential to any building’s strength and stability. It made sense that she wouldn’t feel comfortable leaving it to someone else. 

So, he agreed, after all, it wasn’t something they hadn’t done before. 

Jack had reconnected with his old construction crew for this. He said, “We have about 20 people. They’re. hardworking, reliable folks. Based on my previous experience, I thought the manpower would be enough.” 

If they’d stuck to the original plans with no deeper foundation, his estimate would have been fine. But Jack wanted to do a better job, so he modified the plans and deepened the foundation by just an inch. 

It was a small change on paper but a significant increase in workload. 

“With this change, the crew just isn’t enough.” 

Miranda thought for a moment and asked, “Is this issue going to persist or is it temporary?” 

A one–time blueprint change with a slight delay was acceptable. But frequent changes and constant delays weren’t. 

Jack replied, “I think we’ll need to make a few more adjustments to the plans, and with our current, workforce.. it won’t be sufficient.” 

“I see. Should we find two more construction crews then?” 

Jack chuckled, half in exasperation. “You think construction crews are like vegetables in the market? Like they’re available anytime you pay?” 

“Aren’t they?”

“Of course not! Good crews are booked up for the whole year; you can’t just call them up.” 

“What if we pay extra?” asked Miranda. 

Jack shook his head. “Even if we offered more money, it wouldn’t cover the cancellation penalties they’d have to pay. And even if it did, it would damage their reputation–no one’s going to ruin their own business for us.” 

Miranda didn’t understand. “You mean, even if we’re willing to spend, we still can’t find a good crew?” 

“We could find one, but whether it’s the right fit is a different story. We haven’t worked together before, there’s no reliable recommendation, and the risks are high.” 

On a construction site, even a minor accident could quickly escalate into a major issue. One could never fully know someone’s intentions–who’s to say they won’t try something underhanded? 

By then, it would be too late for regrets.. 

“So, I wouldn’t recommend hiring just anyone.” 

Miranda sighed. 

“Don’t worry. I’ll work on a solution as soon as possible. It’s nearly noon–let’s grab some lunch?” 

“Alright, thanks, Jack,”
