“Do you know him, Miranda?” Jack asked casually 

Miranda nodded. “Yes, I do.” 

“Of course!” 

She and Sam answered at the same time. 

Jack raised an eyebrow. He sized him up from head to toe and back again, his expression growing more disdainful by the second. 

Sam wasn’t fazed by the scrutiny, he calmly pulled out a chair and sat right next to Miranda. 

“Go ahead, take a good look–maybe then you’ll realize your competition and step aside Sam sneered in his mind. 

Meanwhile, Jack thought that he was seriously bold. 

“Miranda, aren’t you going to introduce us?” Jack tilted his chin toward Sam. “This guy doesn’t look like someone you’d know 

“What does he mean by that? What does he look like then?” Sam thought, picking up on the underlying sarcasm instantly 

And it seemed Miranda was unusually tolerant of Jack, as she genuinely started introducing them 

“Yes, Miranda, introduce us. This guy doesn’t look like someone you’d know, either,” Sam shot back sarcastically. 

Jack’s face darkened 

The two men locked eyes, exchanging an unspoken challenge. It seemed they were already a hundred rounds deep in their silent duel Miranda frowned, sensing the tension but not understanding it 

Why 

Why would two men who’d never met have such animosity? Were they really about to go head–to–head like a pair of fighting roosters? 

“Alright, let me introduce you both properly,” she said finally “This is Sam Cooper, my acquaintance and the CEO of an investment company. 

“And this is Jack Sutton, my cousin, who currently runs a smart home renovation company. Any further questions?” 

Sam blurted, “Your cousin?” 

Jack muttered, “He’s actually a CEO?” 

They glanced at each other, each a bit awkward. 

Sam recovered first, lifting his teacup “I apologize, I didn’t know you were Miranda’s cousin. My mistake. Let me give you a toast, soda in place of wine” 

Seeing Sam’s sincere attitude, Jack’s initial annoyance quickly dissolved. He raised his glass in return. No need to be so formal, Mr. Cooper

“So, Miranda mentioned you’re running a smart home renovation company?” Sam asked. 

“Yes. Do you know much about the field?” 

“I’ve invested in a couple of companies specializing in smart home renovation,” Sam said, naming the 

companies. 

Jack looked surprised. “Those are some of the pioneers in smart home renovation in the country–they’ve both gone public in recent years, expanding impressively. Looks like you’ve got a sharp eye for investments, Mr. Cooper.” 

Sam shrugged. “It’s nothing special. I just happened to invest in them. At least I didn’t lose out.”

“Is it common for an investor to personally visit the site?” Jack asked.
