"Kaleb, do you know him?" Laurel couldn't help but ask.

Kaleb introduced him with enthusiasm, "This is Mr. Max Hunt of EastRise."

"Mr. Max, to what do we owe the honor of your visit?" Kaleb asked cautiously.

He hadn't caught what Max had said earlier, but his instincts told him this visit must be business-related.

As businessmen, what else could they possibly discuss?

Max pulled out his phone revealing a photo of Yvette on his lock screen.

"She's my wife. Now do you understand why I'm here?"

Eva's face turned pale. Her legs gave out as she stumbled back several steps, finally stopping only when her lower back hit the stair railing.

Laurel and Kaleb weren't faring much better as they stared at the image on Max's phone in disbelief.

It was Yvette!

Isabel's close friend!

They had all met her before.

"No-no way!" Eva gasped.

Yvette wasn't particularly attractive, nor did she possess any noteworthy talents. She was just an ordinary girl—how could she have suddenly become the wife of EastRise's heir?

"Yes, Mr. Max! Please don't misunderstand Eva. She's the kindest soul! There's no way she'd harm your wife, especially knowing she's pregnant!" Laurel chimed in, eager to defend Eva.

As she spoke, Laurel thought of something.

"It must be Isabel! She must have been slandering us, Mr. Max! You shouldn't believe a word she says. That girl is vile! Back when she was engaged to my son, she even pushed me into the water. How can you trust someone like her?" she shouted.

Max looked at the absurd scene before him and shook his head in exasperation.

"I knew you'd deny it, so before coming, I made sure to pull up the surveillance footage."

He searched for the footage on his phone and tapped play.

Laurel's brows knitted tightly together. She wanted to help Eva, but offending Max's wife was a serious matter. If the situation escalated, it could implicate the Johnsons as well.

"Eva Shepherd, what you did was truly out of line."

Laurel rarely addressed Eva by her full name.

"From this day forward, you have nothing to do with the Johnsons."
