Chapter 266 She's Nothing But Trouble
If Isabel were to say "yes," Yvette wouldn't believe her for a second.
Isabel shot her a thumbs-up. "Hey, you're smart."
Birds of a feather flock together, so it wasn't surprising that Max's friends were just as exceptional as he was.
"What's his identity?" Yvette couldn't wait to ask.
Isabel arched a brow. "Why don't you think about it for a second? You should be able to figure it out."
Yvette's eyes widened. Someone from the Bennett family? And one of Max's closest confidants!
"You—you mean ... He's the wealthiest man in Solaria?!"
"Smart! That's my best friend," Isabel replied with a chuckle.
Yvette suddenly felt like she needed some time to let everything sink in ...
The wedding between Yvette and Max was soon set for January 7th.
To celebrate his upcoming marriage to the love of his life, Max organized a countryside retreat, inviting a crowd of aristocrats and elites from their social circle.
In a sea of nobles, Isabel and Yvette's presence was a stark contrast, leaving them feeling somewhat out of place.
Isabel soon became the focus of mocking and ridicule.
"So, she's Xander's wife? I wonder what kind of tricks she used to climb into his bed," one girl remarked, glaring at Isabel with jealousy, the disdain in her tone all too clear.
"I heard she 'ran into' Xander in front of City Hall," the girl said, deliberately stressing the words "ran into."
"And I also heard that because of her, Xander's mother has been fighting with the entire Bennett family."
"She's nothing but trouble if you ask me."
Isabel was speechless after hearing those comments.
The comments from these people grew harsher with every word, almost all of them aimed at Isabel.
As for Yvette, she was barely mentioned. After all, she was pregnant with triplets, had earned Chandler and Jessica's approval, and even had her wedding date finalized.
This was a done deal, and anyone gossiping about her would risk offending the entire Hunt family.
Isabel, on the other hand, was in a different position. To them, she had used some underhanded trick to marry Xander. Their marriage wasn't acknowledged by Ivana, and she could be thrown out of the Bennett family at any time. So they mocked her however they pleased.
"This is too much!" Yvette clenched her fists and stood up.
Isabel looked up at her. "No need to get so worked up. You're pregnant now; stress isn't good for the babies."
"But they're saying such awful things about you! Why don't you go find Xander and have him stand up for you?"
Xander and Max had wandered off earlier, though no one knew exactly where they had gone.
Isabel reclined on the picnic blanket, lazily soaking up the sun while popping a strawberry into her mouth.
"This kind of petty nonsense doesn't need him to step in. Do you think I'm ignoring them because I'm afraid of causing trouble? If that's what you think, you're wrong. I just figure, if a dog bites me, I'm not about to bite it back."
Her voice wasn't loud, but it wasn't hushed either. She spoke at a perfectly normal volume, neither avoiding confrontation nor deliberately raising her tone.
Just as she could hear those people gossiping about her earlier, Isabel knew they could hear her now.
"Who are you calling a dog? Why are you speaking so rudely?" Harriet rushed forward, her voice seething with rage as she questioned Isabel.
Under Harriet's lead, several other girls glared at Isabel, their anger palpable.
Many of the people around them were Rachel's close friends, and they looked at Isabel as if they wanted to tear her to pieces.
Yvette recognized the rising tension and quickly messaged Max, asking him to bring Xander over as soon as possible.
"What gives me the right?"
Despite the pressure from the angry crowd, Isabel remained unfazed. "She's repeatedly come to my house to seduce my husband, and she even had her collar deliberately pulled open while staying in his study. As his wife, I have every right to hit someone who's trying to ruin our relationship."
At this, the gossiping and murmuring immediately stopped.
Way to go, Isabel!
Yvette silently cheered for Isabel in her heart.
The crowd exchanged glances, and in the end, they all turned to look at Rachel.
Rachel felt so furious she could strangle Isabel, but her face still wore a carefully crafted look of fragile innocence.
"I didn't. I've explained this countless times before. Xan and I grew up together. He's like a brother to me. I only visit him occasionally. Why do you keep misunderstanding me and ignoring my explanations?"
Rachel's tears rolled down her cheeks as she turned her head to the side, quietly dabbing at her eyes.
This sight was enough to trigger someone nearby. "Isabel, don't you think your jealousy is a bit much? Rachel is Xander's god-sister. What's wrong with her occasionally visiting him? And frankly, if it weren't for you interfering, they would already be a couple."
Isabel leaned back, rested her chin on her hand, and let her gaze brim with amusement. "Oh, please. Before I came along, there were plenty of time for them to get together. Weren't they still not together?"
"You ... " The rebuttal left the other person speechless.
Isabel kept pushing with a sly grin. "Let's be real here. Xander and she just aren't fated to be. But me and Xander? We're a match made in heaven. Plain and simple."
Just as she finished, Xander's tall figure appeared, heading straight toward her. Isabel's face lit up instantly, practically glowing with joy.
