I come around the corner, running for the kitchen, not sure what to expect. I don't see anyone when I enter, but I find Amelia on the floor when I come around the island. I rush to her side and kneel beside her. "Oh my god, what happened?" I ask with an urgency in my voice, helping her sit up. "My water broke, and I slipped and fell," Amelia explains with heavy breaths. "Malachi, call an ambulance now!" I shout, and he pulls out his phone to dial. "Call Paul too," I tell him once he is off the phone with 911. "Paul is on his way, he said he would meet us at the hospital," Malachi says, coming to help me lift Amelia to her feet. Malachi lifts her and carries her to the front door as we hear the sirens.
The ambulance pulls into the circular driveway and parks in front of the house. The paramedics step out quickly, coming to Amelia's aid. "How far apart are her contractions?" The paramedic asks, bringing his gaze to me, and his face goes white. "Um...wait. What are you doing here?" He stutters like he saw a ghost, which he has. "I'm sorry. What do you mean? I live here," I state, pretending as if I've never seen him before. "You... you died," He stammers, darting his eyes around to everyone. "You must have me confused with my twin sister. She passed away during childbirth," I lie, hoping he buys it. "Oh, I'm so sorry." He laughs nervously then clears his throat "I'm sorry that was not funny about your sister. I just thought I was going crazy," He explains.
"It's fine. Can we please get my friend to the hospital now?" I suggest eagerly. "Yes, I'm sorry. Would you like to ride with her?" He asks, pointing at Malachi, who raises his eyebrows in surprise. "Me? I'm not the father," He says, putting Amelia down on the stretcher. "I will go with her. She is my best friend" I declare, stepping into the ambulance without letting the paramedic say another word.
"Malachi, get Paisley and meet us at the hospital. I love you," I say, blowing him a kiss as they shut the ambulance doors. I turn my focus to Amelia. "Chloe, I'm scared," She tells me, grabbing my hand as she has another contraction "AAAAHHHH!" Amelia screams in pain, squeezing my hand. "Take a deep breath. You got this," I tell her, taking a deep breath along with her.
Amelia keeps her focus on me the whole ride to the hospital. We pull into the emergency entrance and the paramedics open the doors, wheeling Amelia out. I follow beside her, still holding her hand when Paul rushes over to us from the parking lot. "AMELIA!!" He shouts, coming to her side. "I will be right here, Amelia," I shout as they take her away from me. Paul stays at her side, and they disappear behind some double doors that close automatically. I take a seat in the waiting area, pulling out my phone, as I'm about to dial Marley to tell her the news, but I stop when Malachi walks through the doors of the emergency room with Paisley in his arms. 'Damn, he looks so sexy holding our daughter,' I think to myself, biting my lip.
Malachi walks over and takes a seat next to me. Paisley looks so tiny in his arms. He looks over at me with a raised brow. "What?" He asks. "Oh, nothing. You're just so adorable for being a big scary wolf," I tease, throwing my head back, laughing. Malachi just glares at me. ‘I definitely can’t let him know how hard I was checking him out,’ I scold myself. The man doesn’t need a bigger ego boost.
During our banter, an older woman walks up to us. "Excuse me for bothering you, but I just wanted to say you two make a beautiful couple. You remind me of my husband and me when we were your age" She beams speaking of him. "Aww... Thank you!" I tell her, giving her a warm smile. "Of course, my husband did not look like that, but he sure was something special. He made me feel every ounce of love each day" She grins, looking at Paisley in Malachi's arms. "Yeah, I've heard a few times this guy over here is a looker," I tell her, using my thumb to point at Malachi. His face turns red, and he looks away from us.
The older woman snickers seeing Malachi getting embarrassed. "You have a beautiful family, cherish it while you can," She says, touching Paisley's cheek softly. I give her a sweet smile and the woman walks away, using her walker, without another word. Malachi and I look at each other, and I shrug, laying my head on Malachi's shoulder.
We waited for several hours, and I felt myself getting sleepy, so I went to get Malachi and I a coffee from the cafeteria. Once I'm back, I hand him the cup and take Paisley from him so that I can feed her. Malachi hands me a bottle he mixed, giving it to Paisley and she drinks the whole bottle. I bring her to my shoulder and she burps, then falls asleep in my arms. I finally pulled out my phone to text Marley.
Me: "Hey, Sister! Amelia is having the baby." Marley takes a couple of minutes to text back.
Marley: "OMG!! Make sure to send me pictures. How is Paisley?"
Me: "I will, for sure! Paisley is growing; she is sleeping in my arms now, sucking her thumb."
Marley: "Aww... I miss her. So, when is the wedding?"
Me: "We will have it soon, not sure on an exact date."
Marley: "Okay, make sure to send invites, lol."
Me: "Of course, silly. It may be an invite by phone lol, how are the kids?"
Marley: "haha, okay. They are good. Kali is graduating early and will attend NYU."
