“That’s why I need the Winter Pack to be present,” I replied calmly. “After all, the gathering was held under your name at the Moon Silver Restaurant. Your reputation is at stake too.”

I held his gaze unflinchingly. “Matthew Sterling may not have wealth or status, but he stood up for me when no one else would. He protected me while your pack watched in silence.”

My voice grew stronger with each word. “He took a blow meant for me. Where were you when I needed protection? Where was the Winter Pack when I was dragged to Moon Shadow Prison

for a crime I didn’t commit?”

Alpha James’s expression darkened, but I wasn’t finished.

“Is it that Matthew can’t give me what I want, or he can’t give the Winter Pack what they

want?” I challenged, my silver–scarred wolf bristling beneath my skin.

The truth hung in the air between us. They didn’t care about my happiness. They wanted a

politically advantageous mate marking, another connection to strengthen the pack’s position.

“Celeste,” Luna Victoria stepped forward, her face a mask of maternal concern that once.

would have moved me. “We only want what’s best for you.”

I cut her off with a cold laugh. “What’s best for me? Since when has that been your priority?”

of which I’ve received from this pack since my

return.”

Alpha James’s patience finally snapped. “Enough! I forbid this mate marking. As Alpha of the

Winter Pack-”

“You have no authority over me,” I interrupted, my voice like ice. “I didn’t come here seeking your permission. I came to inform you of my decision.”

My violet eyes held his golden ones, neither of us willing to back down. “Besides, haven’t you already declared our pack ties will be severed? Your exact words, if I recall.”

The reminder struck home. Alpha James’s jaw tightened, his wolf surging with frustration beneath his skin.

An uncomfortable silence filled the main hall. The family that had once been mine stared at

me as if I were a stranger. In many ways, I was.

“Well,” I said, breaking the silence with a deliberately light tone, “since we’ve discussed my future mate marking plans, perhaps we should address Scarlett’s recent… activities.”

I turned to Scarlett, who had remained unusually quiet throughout the confrontation. “Paying omega wolves to fake a k********g. How scandalous.”

Scarlett’s emerald eyes widened with fear. She glanced around wildly, seeking the support

she’d always been guaranteed.

“I didn’t mean for anyone to get hurt!” she protested, her voice rising with panic. “I was just

scared after seeing Alexander with Celeste!”

Her usual tactics – the tears, the trembling lower lip, the wide innocent eyes – all deployed with practiced precision. But for once, they didn’t produce the expected result.

Alpha James looked at her with something I’d never seen directed at Scarlett before – annoyance. Perhaps even a flicker of disgust.

Scarlett noticed it too. Her confidence wavered, her wolf whimpering beneath her skin as she sensed the shift in the pack’s energy.

“Father, brother, please believe me,” she begged, her emerald eyes filling with tears. “I may have wanted to make you worry about me, but I would never pay silver to ruin my own reputation! Those omega wolves really did have bad intentions, Lucas, it’s true!”

She pleaded desperately, her wolf whimpering pathetically as tears flowed freely down her
