I heard shuffling, then my father cried out in pain before the call ended. I laughed at their antics. I envied them, not everyone got to live forever with their mates and they seemed well on their way to doing exactly that.
I changed into my running clothes before making my way out of the house. Running never failed to bring me peace and this morning wasn’t any different, well until…
“You’re wandering out of the pack again,” Simon said to me and I rolled my eyes, letting out a heavy sigh and doing my best to increase my speed so I didn’t have to talk to him, but of course, he persisted.
“I’m sure you heard me speak.” He said once more
“And I’m pretty sure you saw me ignore you and try to run faster so I don’t have to talk to you.” I snapped at him, slowing down once more.
“You can’t talk to me like that Jessy.”
“I wouldn’t talk to you at all if you gave me the choice.”
“Have you always been like this?” He asked and that had me pausing in my steps.
I watched him for a moment, rolling my eyes once more when I caught his glistening bare chest, his face looked hard like it had been since I got here, but that wasn’t what caught my attention, it was the scars littered around his body, especially when I caught a glimpse of his back. They mostly looked like whip marks but that couldn’t just be it, they were some stab marks too and it shocked me how comfortable he was with them, almost as if he couldn’t see them.
“Been like what?” I responded, meeting his eyes once more.
“Stubborn, provocative, nonchalant, cold.” He listed, causing my brows to furrow in anger. I was none of those things and I had never been them either and he knew it.
“Yes, I guess I’ve always been like this,” I responded, before turning around and heading back in the direction I had just come from.
There was no point in running if the purpose was to clear my mind and have a good start to my day but it was already been polluted before any of that could happen. I was glad he didn’t run after me and although I was tempted to turn back to see if he had continued with his running, I didn’t.
Because I could still feel his stare burning into my back and as much as it made me uncomfortable it still made my body tingle in a way that made me blush in shame.
The moment I got home, I headed straight for the shower to wash off the stench and sweat. I heard Lila somewhere around the house bouncing with energy while she was on the phone and I chuckled, lately it had been weird around her. After my little walk with Stephen, she had come home the next day a little cold shouldered but I had assumed it was from whatever had happened between herself and her boyfriend but then the next day it was all gone, almost like I had imagined it.
And since then, it had been this circle of hot and cold, and while it gave me whiplash, it didn’t give me any cause for concern yet and so I was willing to let it go.
Once I was dressed in comfortable clothes, I made my way to the kitchen and Lila greeted me with a big smile which I immediately returned.
“Good morning, I made pancakes. Grab a plate.”
“Looks like someone’s in a good mood,” I responded while moving to pull a plate out from one of the cupboards.
“What do you mean? I’m always in a good mood!” She said dramatically and I chuckled.

“Of course, of course. Anyway, I was thinking of trying to find a job. Nothing extra, just you know something light that I could do to keep myself occupied.”
