Ella POV 

The Roguelands had never felt so unstable, not even in the darkest moments of political unrest. 

The arrests of David, Amanda, and their allies had set off a chain reaction that rippled across the kingdom, and now the weight of that chaos was bearing down on Alexander more than ever. 

As the Ice King, he was expected to manage the fallout, to ensure that everything remained under control, but I could see the toll it was taking on him. He was gone every night, working behind the scenes, wrestling with the shadows of the political landscape. 

All the while, he had to maintain his business here in the capital. It was too much to ask of any one person, and I was helping where I could, but the majority of the work fell to him. 

The fact that the media was hyper focused on the election didn’t help. The drama around Archer had caused more attention to be aimed at us, as well. We had to be careful every time we left the apartment. You never knew when someone would be watching. 

In Alexander’s absence, I was left to question whether I had made things worse. 

I stayed up into the night, pouring over the documents my father had sent me. His voice echoed in my head as I tried to decipher the details of Archer’s campaign and the strange sources of his donations. 

My father had used his connections and resources to investigate Archer’s activities, and what he found was unsettling. Archer had received contributions from individuals with questionable ties to the North. 

The North… where Ironfang’s influence still loomed large. The implications of this were as ominous as they were confusing. What was Archer’s game? Was he truly the person he claimed to be, or was he merely a pawn in a much bigger scheme? 

I couldn’t bring myself to think about it for too long. Instead, my thoughts drifted back to my parents, who were planning to come visit soon. 

They wanted to be here in person, to discuss everything and help me navigate the mess we were tangled in. As much as I loved them and appreciated their support, a part of me wished they didn’t have to be involved. 

I feared that I had already brought them into a dangerous situation, and I didn’t know how to keep them safe in all 

of this. 

My father had always been protective of me. His messages and calls had grown more frequent, especially since. David’s arrest. He was worried, too worried for my safety, and he had made it clear that, as long as Archer was free, I would remain a target. 

I understood his concern; he was an Alpha, a powerful man with the means to take action when necessary. But I had to remind him, again and again, that the King was watching over me as well. 

Besides that, Alexander had made sure I was secure, that the guards were on alert, and that my every movement was protected. James was never far away and he wasn’t alone. I knew there were others keeping an eye on me. 

But I couldn’t shake the feeling that no matter how much protection I had, it would never be enough. This world, this life we lived, was unpredictable, and in this moment, the only certainty I had was that Alexander and I were both on the edge of something much darker than we could’ve anticipated. 

The sound of the door opening startled me from my thoughts. Alexander stepped into the room, his face drawn and weary. His eyes were tired, the kind of tired that told a story of long hours and restless nights. 

I didn’t need to ask if everything was okay. I already knew the answer. 

“Are you alright?” I asked, setting the documents aside. 

He shook his head, a grim look in his eyes. “Something big is coming, Ella. I can feel it. But even with all my resources, I can’t see it clearly.” His voice held a hint of frustration, the kind that came from feeling like you were being pulled in a dozen directions. 

“What do you mean?” I asked, my concern rising. 

He hesitated before answering, his gaze turning distant as he were weighing how much to share with me.” David may have been working for Ironfang after all.” 

The words hit me like a punch to the gut. Ironfang? The name alone sent a chill down my spine. 

Ironfang was ruthless, cold, and calculating. He wasn’t a man who played by the rules. He would do whatever it took to get what he wanted, and the fact that David, a man once thought I could trust, might have been working for him sent my mind spinning. 

“If that’s true,” Alexander continued, “it means things are much worse than we believed.” He ran a hand through his hair, clearly troubled. “Ironfang is a deadly force. He’s not like anyone we’ve dealt with. He hates me, Ella. And if he’s really involved, it’s not just about politics anymore. It’s personal.”

I felt a wave of terror wash over me at the thought. Alexander had always been the strong one, the one who protected me. But Ironfang wasn’t something I could fight off with just determination. He was a force that could tear everything apart. 

“I’ve survived attempts by David and Amanda,” I pointed out, trying to steady my nerves, trying to convince myself that I could handle whatever came next.
