"You could just bring them to your own plate." Sophia watched as his chopsticks moved around on her plate, picking up the chicken wing she had already bitten into. She said, "There are still some chicken wings left. Take your own if you want to eat them."
She used her chopsticks to stop him but failed to do so. Charles grabbed the chicken wing away like taking candy from a baby. "I think this one looks tastier."
Having said that, he took a bite of the chicken wing, biting right where she had bitten. Sophia could not tell if he was doing it intentionally or not.
"Charles Harris." Sophia put down her chopsticks and looked at him with a grim look on her face.
Charles raised his head to look at her, then answered her with the same words she used to say to him, "You don’t have to raise your voice. I can hear you."
"What exactly are you trying to do?" Every single word that Sophia said was squeezed out of her throat.
"I’ve said it before." Charles swallowed the food in his mouth, pulled out a tissue, and wiped his slightly greasy lips. "I’m pursuing you."
Sophia paused for a moment, then snorted in an exceedingly soft voice that carried an unconcealable hatred when it wafted through the air. "Charles, do you think I will accept your pursuit as if all those things that happened didn’t happen?"
Nothing he ever did could make her forgive him, let alone the things he had done to her back then!
The physical pain and humiliation she suffered tormented her day after day even in her dreams. The pain had been carved into her soul with a knife over and over again. They could never be erased!
Seeing the resentment on her face, Charles’ eyes darkened. It felt as though he was sinking into quicksand at this moment as his eyes, ears, nose, and mouth were all covered by sand. He could not see light or breathe air—pain was all that was left.
"Whether you accept me or not is your business; whether I want to pursue you or not is my business." He swirled the red wine in his glass, then raised his head. With a roll of his Adam’s apple, the wine glass was soon empty.
Sophia clenched her hands bit by bit and gnashed her teeth. "You don't love me at all. You only love yourself. The only one you will ever care about is yourself. You never take my feelings into consideration!!!"
Charles’ pupils reflected her figure. His throat tightened like something was grasping it.
Beep.
Beep.
The sound of a phone vibrating.
Sophia stood up with a sullen look on her face before getting up and leaving with her phone in her hand.
Charles stood up as well and followed behind her.
"Don't follow me!" Sophia stopped walking and turned around to look at him, snarling under her breath.
Charles stopped as well. The undisguised look of disgust on her face pierced his eyes so hard that it hurt. He pursed his lips and said mildly, "Sawyer, Leah, and William are all here. Be careful when you’re by yourself."
Sophia stared coldly at him without a word and made a beeline for Wealth Hall’s exit with the phone still buzzing in her hand.
Charles stared at her back and took a step forward but retracted his foot before his shoe could touch the ground. He watched her disappear in the doorway as a hint of darkness flashed in his eyes.
"Hello?" Sophia walked out of Wealth Hall and entered the bathroom before answering the call.
The call was from Master Harris’ underling to tell her that they were already downstairs of the hotel in a black MPV. He told her to hurry up.
She asked the other party for the vehicle registration number so that she would not recognize the wrong person, but the other party replied and said that they were the only black MPV there. Hence, looking at the car model was easier than searching for the vehicle registration number.
Sophia thought it made sense, so she did not ask anymore and hung up the call after telling him that she would go downstairs immediately. Her heart was still thumping violently.
She would be able to leave Charles very soon… This felt exceedingly unreal—like she was dreaming!
Sophia took a deep breath and got out of the bathroom to wait for the elevator. During this period of time, she felt like someone was following behind her. However, she did not see anyone behind her every time she turned back to look.
She was probably too nervous, hence the illusion.
