"What did you say?" Sawyer raised his voice sharply.
Before Sophia could say anything, one of the men said cautiously, "When we brought Ms. White over, the driver in that car told us that they’re Master Harris’ men."
Sawyer did not say anything. Blood drained from his face at once.
Sophia breathed a sigh of relief in her heart, but she did not show it on her face. She said with a mild countenance, "The Jones and Harris families may have agreed to form an alliance through marriage and Leah may have been chosen as the nominal granddaughter-in-law of the Harris family, but..."
She stroked her belly, her eyes softening. "I’m pregnant with Master Harris' great-grandson. It has been two months now."
Sawyer followed her eyes, his gaze falling on her inconspicuous belly. Feeling as though he had eaten a fly, he cursed under his breath.
"Also, I’m sure you know that Master Harris has stage four lung cancer without much time left to live. He wants to see his first great-grandson before he passes on. Say, if you get someone to rape me and cause me to miscarry, judging from your understanding of Master Harris’ temper, what do you think he’ll do to you?" Sophia's hands were shaking slightly, but her countenance remained pretty much the same.
Blood had completely drained from Sawyer’s face. It was obvious that he looked 70 to 80 percent convinced.
At this time, however, the man who heaved Sophia on his shoulder earlier blurted out, "The car was heading in the direction of the prison when we intercepted. If Master Harris values you so much, then why did he ask his men to take you to prison, Ms. White?"
"!" Sophia’s heart dropped with a thump. A dense layer of sweat formed on her palms.
Sawyer narrowed his fox-like eyes and looked at Sophia with a faint smile on his face. "How do you explain that? Is it fun to lie?"
"How can you prove that I am lying just because Master Harris' men were on their way to take me to prison? Your sense of logic puzzles me greatly, Mr. Phillips." Sophia sneered. Her countenance remained the same, but her back was already drenched in cold sweat.
Sawyer stared at her, waiting for her to explain herself.
"I’m sure you’ve seen the scars on my body, Mr. Phillips?" Sophia pulled her skirt up slightly, revealing the crisscrossed scars on her thighs.
Everyone present on the scene was astonished.
When Sawyer looked at her scars under the light back then, he thought those scars complimented her elegance, making her seem unique. At this moment, however, he looked away almost instantly when her scars were in full view.
These scars were like snakes twisting and intertwining with each other, grossing out anyone who looked at her while making their scalp tingle. He must have hit his head back then to have the desire to sleep with her.
"Hurry up and put your skirt down, it's disgusting!" Sawyer said impatiently, "What do the scars on your body have anything to do with Master Harris sending you to prison? Be straightforward and don't try to fool me!"
Under their disgusted and horrified gazes, Sophia put down her skirt with a mild countenance before saying, "You feel fear and pain when you look at them. I don’t think I need to tell you how painful it was for me back then when I experienced it."
None of them made any comment.
Sophia sighed softly. "I got these scars back when I was in prison. After I was released from prison, I would have nightmares every single night. I’d dream of myself getting bullied by my inmates.
"My sleep quality and state of mind have directly affected the development of the fetus. After the psychiatrist told me this, he suggested that I might feel slightly better if I watched my bullies get beaten up with my own eyes."
A mixture of truth and falsehood made it difficult for anyone to tell what the truth actually was.
Sawyer looked at Sophia with a trace of doubt in his eyes.
Sophia’s palm broke out in another layer of cold sweat under his stare, but she had no choice but to maintain a stoney resolve.
She turned to look at the man who carried her in earlier. "Mister, did you notice the three strong men when you entered the car?"
