Jenny was stunned when she heard James’s words. A teardrop hung on her eyelashes for a second before sliding down her cheek. “You… Is that what you have always thought? You think that it’s all because of you that our children are well provided for?”
“... Of course not, it’s not just me!” James paused before continuing, “If it wasn’t for Mother and Father who left me the company, I wouldn’t be able to provide for you and our children the good life we have now!”
“They should have a conscience though. Ster and Sophia aren’t talented in any way, if I hadn’t been able to support the company myself, would the company be as successful as it is today? Forget it if Soph can’t understand my pains, but…”
Sophia snorted and interrupted him. “Since my brother and I were kids, you arranged dancing classes for me whereas Ster went down the athletic pathway. You never let either one of us touch anything related to the company, so how can you blame us for knowing nothing?”
“Seeing how the two of you did so badly academically, I was worried that the two of you wouldn’t even be able to graduate from high school! If both of you had studied harder and shown more potential, do you think I would have let you take those useless classes?” James asked sternly.
Jenny’s throat had gotten hoarse from all the screaming, and so she picked up her drink and took a couple of sips. She hesitated for a short moment before speaking, “Soph, let’s not go off-topic here. Your father had you take up dance classes and your brother learn sports because he cares about both of you.”
“You still think that Father does everything for us siblings out of genuine love and care, don’t you?” As the words came out of Sophia’s mouth, she was rather uncertain about how she felt at the moment.
She noticed the changes in her mother over this short period of time, and she could not deny that it did make her reconsider returning to the White Family.
However, she was too afraid. She was scared that if she ever encountered another difficult situation, her mother would stand on her opposite side once again and give her another slap on someone else’s behalf, just like what happened this time where her mother had slapped her because of her father.
“It’s not like that at all!” Jenny quickly explained. “I know that your father has his faults and he did make mistakes of his own, but at the end of the day, he’s still your father and he loves you!”
“You can’t deny all the things he did for you in the past just because of one mistake!”
Sophia bit her lips and curled her fists tightly. “Okay, let me ask you a question then. When you and Mr. White got married, my grandparents disapproved of your marriage, right? They had their will redone on the day both of you collected your wedding certificate, didn’t they?”
Jenny sneaked a glance at James before nodding her head. Tears came to her eyes once again as she reminded herself of the blissful moments they once shared, compared to how things were today.
“They stated in their will that if anything happened to them, all the shares and assets under their names will be transferred to me and my brother. If we were still underage at that time, everything would be transferred temporarily to you and Father’s name, and when we come of age, the company will belong to Ster whereas everything else will go to me.”
“In order to justifiably hold onto everything instead of transferring it to me and my brother, Mr. White never let both of us siblings come close to the company’s management affairs. Not only that, he intentionally spoiled us all our lives so that we’d be deemed incompetent to take over the assets, is that right?” When Sophia finished her last sentence, she gritted her teeth as she glared at James.
Jenny was completely shocked, disbelief written all over her face.
James jumped up with rage and quickly sat back down on his chair. He gulped down two mouthfuls of his drink before he continued, “Where did you get such preposterous news? So I can’t even be nice to my children now? Apparently, I have some ulterior motive here?”
“That’s right, Soph. Yes, your father was wrong in the way he handled this car accident incident but he couldn’t have spoiled you intentionally, right?” Jenny said with a huge frown on her face, “Parents would only wish for the best for their children, they only want to see their children succeed in life, so how can you say something like that? You think too badly about your father!”
She blamed her husband for being too rigid, but she could not help but hope that her husband would apologize to her daughter. Then, her daughter would forgive him and the four of them, in addition to two adorable babies, could reunite as a happy family and continue with their lives happily.
Just as they did before.
Both mother and daughter had lived together for eighteen years, and now, how could Sophia possibly not know what her mother was thinking about by just looking at her? Sophia felt as if her head was swirling with a torrent of mixed emotions but she was unsure how she felt exactly at the moment.
