Sophia only managed to find a pen and no paper, so she noted down everything in her phone’s notepad.
“Don’t put too much pressure on yourself.” Nicole advised. “Ms. Leadman has never been on good terms with Father. She’s clearly out to get you by giving a newbie like you such a difficult task.”
“Would the chief financial director’s assistant usually handle such cases under normal circumstances?” Sophia asked.
Nicole gulped.
“Alright, I understand,” Sophia continued.
Nicole was just worried that she was overexerting herself. “You’re pregnant now, you shouldn’t be wearing yourself out like this. Think about Master Harris’ menace. Do you really think your performance in the company is just as important?”
“Nicole, I understand what you’re trying to say. I’ll take better care of myself. You can go now, I have to study,” Sophia replied.
Seeing that Sophia was oblivious to her words, Nicole let out a heavy sigh. “It’s all your dumb brother’s fault. He said he would work hard last time but didn’t persevere, and recently, he has been so busy again. If he had…”
“No matter how flawed my brother is, it’s nothing compared to how good he is to me.” Sophia gave her a tight smile.
After Nicole left, Sophia did not hit the books right away. Instead, she brought a pregnancy test strip to the bathroom. After a short wait, she checked the paper strip—two lines.
Sophia licked her dry lips as she tore up the pregnancy test strip and threw the pieces into the waste bin. Then, she took out her books.
Later that night, when Charles rested his hand on her waist, she gently removed his hand. With her back against him, she said, “I’m pregnant.”
She tucked both hands beneath her head and felt something cold fall on her hands. She bit her lower lip hard and wiped away her tears.
In a blink of an eye, four days went by.
Sophia was still trying to avoid Charles. She tried to get a driver, but James would not allow it. Since Sterling was so busy, he was nowhere to be seen. She had no other choice but to ride with Charles.
The two of them shared each meal together every day and kept their conversation at a minimum. On the occasion that they had to communicate, they would exchange one or two sentences at most. Both of them were as cold as strangers.
The White family noticed their unusual behavior as well. They tried talking to Sophia in private, but she merely dismissed them and convinced them that nothing was wrong.
She knew that she was not good enough for Charles and there was an imbalance in their relationship. On top of that, both of them were extremely proud people who would never make mutual concessions. Neither one of them was willing to compromise, so they were just not suited for each other in the long run.
What she needed now was to grow stronger so that when she and Charles separated, she would still have the ability to fight for the custody of her child.
Today was the final day that Maisie had given her, but aside from meeting Mr. Stewart on the first day of the task assignment, Sophia and Thomas had not been able to see him ever since. The sly fox had been avoiding them like the plague. He even stopped going to the office.
“I remember you said that you have an idea on our first day. Are you still not going to tell me what it’s about?” Thomas glanced at the people coming and going at Jones Group’s lobby and asked.
Sophia looked at the time. It was 11 o’clock. “Thomas, you should go now.”
“???” Thomas was confused.
“I want to talk to Ms. Jones alone.” Sophia did not elaborate further.
