Sophia carefully put away the note and ignored Madam Johnson who was making a scene.
Just as she was about to close the door, Madam Johnson suddenly darted forward and grabbed her by the wrist.
“Where are Jenny’s ashes? I want to ask her myself!” Madam Johnson’s eyes were bloodshot, and a look of menace shrouded her face. “My husband doesn’t even like Hellen anymore, so what’s wrong with us getting together?”
“Love doesn’t even exist in their relationship anymore yet Hellen still wants to make such a big fuss about it! How can she just blame everything on me? Even if Hellen and I have our differences, what does it have to do with Jenny anyway?”
She continued sobbing. “I have never done anything… unworthy of Jenny, so how can she hate me and refuse to let me see her one last time?”
Madam Johnson’s grip on her hand was so hard that Sophia’s wrist began to ache. “I’m sorry, Madam Johnson, but I can’t answer that either.”
“Fine then! If you don’t want to tell me where she is, bring me there right now!” Madam Johnson was like a possessed madwoman, pulling Sophia out of the house with extreme force.
Sophia would have been normally struggling out of her grasp but right then, Madam Johnson’s grip was especially strong, and Sophia could barely budge. Instead, she lurched forward along as Madam Johnson tugged her and almost fell to the ground.
Fortunately, Sophia managed to grab hold of the door and steadied herself. Her right arm instinctively went to her abdomen as her heart fluttered with fear.
She mustered all her strength and shoved Madam Johnson aside. With a deep frown, she said, “My mom isn’t even here anymore, do you think she can even answer your questions? If you really see her as your friend, just follow her last wish and give her a sense of peace.”
As Madam Johnson took in Sophia’s words, the fury in her face was slowly replaced with pain and sorrow.
She slowly crumpled to the floor, muttering incoherently under her breath as tears kept streaming down her face.
“That woman doesn’t even want to see you now that she’s dead so why are you forcing it? Weren’t you the one who taught me to live my own life and not pay attention to everyone else?” Shawn went over to drag her back.
Sophia disregarded the sarcasm in his words and lowered her eyes at Madam Johnson who was sitting on the floor. “It’s cold out here, you shouldn’t be sitting on the ground like this.”
With that, she went back into the manor and closed the door behind her.
She stood behind the door quietly for a while before moving to the sofa and poured herself a glass of water.
Was it even possible to draw a line between who was right and who was wrong?
Beep——
Beep——
Right then, her phone suddenly began buzzing.
Sophia picked up her phone and saw that it was Clara calling. “Hello, Ms. Robertson.”
“How many times have I told you to just call me Clara? Stop calling me Ms. Robertson, you make me sound like a stranger!” Clara complained. Then, she continued in an enthusiastic voice, “Sophia, Zachary told me about that migrant worker uncle. Were you really the one who made the introduction?”
“Yeah, his son donated his heart to my dad,” Sophia replied.
“That uncle and his son are so kind-hearted people, why are they constantly encountering tragedies in their life!” Clara exclaimed with a sigh. “Anyway, we already settled it so you don’t have to worry about it anymore!”
Sophia was slightly shocked. “That was quick!”
Accepting the case and understanding the ins and outs, preparing the necessary information, going to court… She had just told them about the case yesterday, how did they settle it so quickly?
“Obviously, we wouldn’t have been able to resolve this so soon if we follow our usual protocol, but the construction company’s manager somehow gotten wind that we were in charge of this case and he just came over straightaway with a gift asking to make peace. He offered to pay the uncle three million bucks and apologize to the uncle as well. Most importantly, he agreed to never hire the same contractor anymore.”
“Initially, I still insisted on filing a lawsuit but Zachary explained that it only makes more sense if they pay the uncle three million bucks than close the construction site for a few months, so I talked to him and he agreed to his manager’s request.”
Clara sounded slightly down when she got to the latter part.
