Victor’s heart skipped a beat as he paused for a moment before replying, “She’s a friend I met when I was studying in America, I don’t think you met her before.”

“... I never met her before?” Madam Hemingway still thought the person before her was extremely familiar but she could not place a finger on the feeling. Her instincts told her that she had met this person before.

Well, a woman’s intuition was incredibly terrifying.

Victor gave a dry cough as he said, “Anyway, it doesn’t matter who she is. Her injuries are so severe that even if her parents stood here right now, I doubt they would be able to recognize her, let alone you.”

“That’s true, I don’t know anyone who was burned….” Madam Hemingway paused mid-sentence and turned to Victor with a frown.

She had heard that Soph had died in a fire accident, and now Vic was suddenly so worried about this burn patient. This was too much of a coincidence!

The instant Victor met his gaze, he knew that she had already guessed it.

“Vic, come out with me for a second.” Madam Hemingway gave the doctor and nurses some orders before signaling Victor to come out of the room with her.

Victor trailed behind her and once he left the room, he closed the door behind him.

Madam Hemingway had her back against him but as soon as she heard the door shut, she turned around to him and growled at him in a low tone, “Vic, are you crazy?!”

She let out a heavy breath as she continued, “If Mr. Harris and his family find out that Sophia is still alive and you’re the one hiding her, did you even think about the consequences?”

Victor was so anxious and jittery before when he was tiptoeing around the issue, but now that his mother was asking him upfront, he felt strangely calm.

“If you and I don’t say anything, Mr. Harris and his family won’t find out about it.”

Seeing that he showed no signs of regret, Madam Hemingway was exasperated. “Give me a reason why you’re doing this! Don’t tell me…”

Suddenly realizing that she was speaking louder and louder, she lowered her tone before continuing, “Don’t tell me that you fell for Soph and came up with this stupid idea because you can’t win her over from Mr. Harris!”

Victor had thought that his mother was being serious discussing this matter, but when she suddenly said this…

“My Queen, you have got to stop watching those urban romance dramas,” Victor said, “I did this because Ms. White asked me to, not because I… have feelings for her and I’m not trying to snatch her away from Mr. Harris.”

He choked slightly when he said the second half of the sentence as a strange feeling rose to his chest. Although he was unsure what feeling it was, it sure did not feel pleasant.

Madam Hemingway instantly let out a sigh of relief upon hearing this. “Soph and Mr. Harris are a couple deeply in love with each other. Even if you do intrude, you won’t get anything out of it. Even Ms. Jones, as smart as she is…”

Victor put his hand out and interrupted her. “I won’t become the third person who meddles in relationships, and that’s my bottom line. Mom, you don’t have to worry about this.”

He did not want to discuss this with his mother anymore.

“Alright.” Madam Hemingway nodded and cast a brief look at the hospital room before saying softly, “I can’t say anything about you helping Soph this time, but if you need any help with anything after this like getting a new identity or whatever, just come to me if you need any help.”

“One thing though,” she paused as she looked at him solemnly. “The person who is trying to destroy the Harris family is someone we can’t afford to offend. Please try to keep a distance from Soph once you help her get back on her feet, got it?”

Victor lowered his gaze quietly.

“Vic?” Madam Hemingway frowned.

Victor raised his head and looked at her. “If Ms. White and I were to switch places, do you think she should help me?”

Ms. White had given him the responsibility to carry this task out because she trusted him and he did not want to disappoint her.

Madam Hemingway froze for a slight second and tried to stray away from the question. “There’s no point for you to imagine such scenarios, you’re not Soph and she’s not you. You wouldn’t get into this mess.”

As soon as the words came out of her mouth, she realized how ‘mess’ was an understatement for what Sophia went through. “I don’t mean anything, but I just think that not anyone is as unlucky as Soph.”
