Charles instantly relaxed upon hearing this.
It seems that Sophia was taken away by a passer-by and she was not in danger. A small smile tugged on his lips, but he quickly wiped it away.
Mr. Zellner immediately regretted using the walkie-talkie to talk about such an important matter. He had thought that his plan was foolproof, but little did he expect such a big problem to pop up all of a sudden.
He quickly glanced at Charles who was seemingly in deep thought and frowned. However, he did not have a better solution, and so he gritted his teeth and asked, “How long is this ‘right away’ going to take?!”
Before the person could answer, Charles spoke first, “So according to my understanding, Mr. Zellner, you have no idea where Sophia is either, do you?”
Mr. Zellner’s grip around the walkie-talkie tightened so much that his knuckles turned white. “So what if I don’t, does it matter?”
“Well, if you don’t, I’m afraid that this deal has been called off.” Charles stared straight into Mr. Zellner’s eyes, completely unfazed.
He had analyzed the situation very clearly to Mr. Zellner just moments ago and he believed that Mr. Zellner would not act rashly toward him now that he understood the possible scenarios.
Mr. Zellner’s expression darkened. He had no choice. He knew that if he killed Charles right then and there, Commander Zoe would have enough valid reason to lock him up.
If he was sent into prison, the chances of coming out were near zero!
However, if he let Charles go just like this, he was not off the hook either if the accounting records fall into the hands of Commander Zoe or anyone from the Department of Justice!
Seeing that Charles was about to leave, Mr. Zellner could not think too much anymore. “Wait!”
Charles stopped and turned around to look at him coldly.
“Your grandmother and step-grandfather are here, don’t you want to see them?” Mr. Zellner had no clue how important Sylvia and Jax were to Charles, but no matter what differences they had, they were of the same blood. There was no way Charles would just sit around and do nothing!
Mr. Zellner clapped his hands and motioned to his subordinates to bring Sylvia and Jax over.
Tied up in ropes, the two of them looked like a sorry mess with the blue and purple bruises all over their face.
“I never lied to you from the start, killing Sophia had never been my intention, it was all your grandmother and Leah’s plan. I just wanted to sneak away some of Harris Corporation’s funds when you were down in the dumps after breaking up with Sophia.
“I never thought of killing Sophia because I’m aware of your capability, and I knew how relentless you would be so you would certainly find out about it in the end.”
Since threats and tempts were not working, Mr. Zellner switched tactics. “Mr. Harris, in all fairness, we don’t owe each other anything. What about this, give me the accounting records and I’ll let you, your grandmother, and Mr. Cabot walk free? We’ll be done with each other from now on and we won’t owe each other any favors.”
Slumped on the ground, Sylvia looked up at Charles hopefully.
She had something stuffed in her mouth so she could only let out a measly whimper, but she seemed quite on edge.
Charles merely cast them a cold look and said nothing.
“If Commander Zoe asks why you handed the records to me, you can just tell him that I threatened you and it will all be fine.” Mr. Zellner was getting antsy seeing that Charles was unmoved.
Charles looked away and said lightly, “You can do whatever you want with them.”
With that, he turned to leave.
“Mr. Harris, are you sure? This woman is your paternal grandmother!” Mr. Zellner frowned and shouted exasperatedly.
Charles did not even respond this time as he continued walking.
Bang!
A muffled gunshot rang in the air.
This time, Charles stopped in his tracks, but he did not turn around either.
Seeing this, Mr. Zellner let out a breath of relief. It seems like these two were still worth something to Charles. “That shot hit Mr. Cabot’s leg. If you don’t agree with my conditions, I have no choice but to kill him now, and then your grandmother.”
These two knew too much and they would eventually become a liability to him.
