"I'm not gay, thank you." Charles pushed Zachary out of his face.
Rendered speechless, Zachary simply took off his gold wire-rimmed glasses, which was pushed sideways, and curiously asked, "First Madam Jones, the Jones siblings, then Mr. Jones. All four Jones came to urge you to marry Leah?"
Charles frowned and did little to hide his dislike of the Jones in front of him. "Duh!"
"I thought they might say more than that." Zachary then said, "Like about keep your distance from Sophia and about you and your mom's attitude toward Sophia... That sort of thing."
Charles had lived for 24 years, and although Master Harris was not fond of him, he had never felt so wronged before. Being plotted against and being unable to punish them was tormenting for him. He also had to be coerced into doing things against his will.
He picked up the glass of red wine. The cold liquid ran down his throat, subduing the heat in his heart. "They've said what you've guessed."
"Forcing you into marriage and being so bossy… The Jones are getting more and more obnoxious!" Zachary grabbed a dessert and sighed.
Charles grunted noncommittally.
"Charles." Zachary tossed the remaining half into his mouth, and after a moment's hesitation, he asked, "When you marry Leah, won't Aunt Harris..."
There was a pause before he continued, "Won’t Aunt Harris have a problem with it?"
Things were a bit complicated between Mr. Harris, Madam Jones, and Yvette. Except for some of the younger generation, it was a well-known fact in their circle.
Charles’ father, Mr. Harris, used to be a real playboy who changed his female partners like he was changing clothes, but Madam Jones was an exception.
They grew up together. Mr. Harris wanted to marry Madam Jones, but the latter thought he had too many love affairs, so she married Mr. Jones, who had been very aggressive in pursuing her back then.
If only that was the end of the story...
Mr. Harris was so angry that he followed Master Harris' advice and married Yvette, who was an appropriate match.
Meanwhile, Madam Jones had been spoiled since she was little. After she married Mr. Jones, even though Mr. Jones had tried his best to treat her well, if anything was not to her liking, she would turn to Mr. Harris and complain.
Madam Jones had even asked Mr. Harris out on the night of his wedding to Yvette. He did not return all night. Many similar or more egregious things happened since then.
When Yvette first got married to Mr. Harris, she had a lot of trouble with Mr. Harris because of this. This brought them to the point of divorce several times. However, neither the Harris family nor the Coxes family agreed.
As for Mr. Jones, thanks to Madam Jones, the Jones family gained much from Harris Corporation. He turned a blind eye to her actions, so long as the children were his.
Charles tapped his long fingers on the table. He made a slight fist and turned his head toward him. He asked rhetorically, "Uncle Johnson made his bastard the CEO of the family business, while you, the eldest young master of the Johnsons, was once forced to go abroad. Don't you have a problem with that?"
There was silence.
After a while, Zachary put on his glasses, gave a chuckle, and lowered his head slightly before saying, "I crossed the line. Forget what I said."
"I've gone a little too far too. Sorry." Charles rubbed between his eyebrows, his eyes darkening. "There are some things that are out of my mother's control after marrying into the Harris. Just like you and me, who are born to the Johnsons and the Harris... Some things are simply out of our hands."
