Soon, dinner was served. While Lauren set the table, Willy stood idly aside, suddenly realizing he was still at a loss, nothing he could do at all to help. Yvette was just right there in front of him, trying to climb the chair as she looked at her mother, yet couldn't do something as simple as carrying her up to her seat.

For the first time, he was shrouded in deep, utter helplessness and defeat.

He thought of reaching out a few times, only to withdraw his hands right as he extended them. Similarly, he opened his mouth, but not a single note came out.

"Dinner's ready..."

With that, Lauren habitually carried Yvette up to her seat and put a bib on her before giving her her plate of potatoes and cutleries.

"Good girl, go on, dig in!"

"Thank you for the meal, Mommy!"

Yvette clearly knew her table manners. Despite holding her cutleries, she didn't eat when the adults hadn't taken their seats. Willy, however, was utterly distraught when he looked at the hearty dinner and the warm and blissful scene of the loving mother and daughter while he was shut out of their world.

After taking her seat, Lauren only looked over at Willy, who still stood idly aside. "Have some dinner first!"

Because of Yvette's clinging and fussing, and her head had been in a mess since she came back, she and Willy barely had the chance to speak even till now. Yvette, however, glanced at Willy and looked away, pouting with her spoon in her mouth, evidently not welcoming him.

His baby girl's blatant contempt got him utterly crushed, but despite his heartache, he still sat down.

He genuinely even dreamed about this scene in his sleep.

But never did he expect to be the one to have crushed his own dream when it came true. He had a gorgeous and adorable daughter, yet he never realized.

Lauren scooped some zucchini into Yvette's plate and then some fish, making sure there weren't any bones, before asking, "Do you want some fish, baby girl? You'll become smarter if you eat your fish!"

"No!"

Yvette covered her plate and shook her head.

Then, she took a piece of beef and more zucchini herself, eating away merrily.

Willy, on the other hand, only fiddled with the food on his plate, hadn't taken a bite still.

Lauren wasn't too happy to see that he seemed to be crushed by Yvette's rejection either. So she voluntarily scooped some food onto his plate. But right as she reached out for the dishes, Yvette immediately stopped what she was doing and shot her gaze right over, pouting upsettingly.

"Mommy, I want that!"

She pointed at the plate of frittata, which was closest to Lauren.

"Okay!" Lauren shook her head, helpless, as their eyes met, giving her a bit of everything with a smile.

It was a silent dinner; Willy and Lauren watched their daughter eat during most of it, not knowing what they ate themselves. However, the little one didn't seem very much affected, cleaning her plate, as usual, even scraping the last bit of stew.

"These are two different matters!"

Lauren hissed as she hit the roof. "What's between us has nothing to do with her. I don't want her to live in bitterness. I just want her to grow up happily!"

No way would she let her daughter walk the same path she did; a childhood without happiness, a wish with no future. How could she let her live a lonely and dark life?

"Willy Bowles, I will come after you even when I'm dead if you dare hurt Yvette!"

"So, you came back and turned yourself into someone else to torture me? Laurie, just how much do you hate me?" Did she realize how devastated he was for her because of Tevye and Lauren? Oh, how she had tortured him to the brink of insanity!

"Yeah, I hate you, so much so that I still can't drop it after having Yvette in my life! Willy Bowles, you destroyed Lauren and it's also because of you Tevye was born! YOU came to me, turned me into a woman and a mother... Do you know how sudden and foreign it was all to me? But even as unprepared as I was, I tried to take it all in! You forced yourself into my life and changed it completely, but what were you doing when I was carrying your child and trying to put any effort into our relationship?!"

Her heart still bled, thinking back to all that. But the hatred in her eyes vanished in a split second despite having gone through so much and making grudges.

"You lied to me! I've tolerated it all when you left me behind for your ex, again and again, going on dates and reuniting with her and your illegitimate daughter. But how can you also use me for your bets?! Willy Bowles, what is a woman, who conceived a child for you, to you? A mere tool to procreate or a piece of trash that has been drained of all her value? I can accept our deal, accept our accidental baby, and even accept that you don't love me, but you shouldn't lie to me! You shouldn't have used me, hurt me, and used me in your bets when I was pregnant with your child! Your daughter and I, two living, breathing lives that share an intimate relationship with you, yet we're worth even less than a car to you, a several-million-dollar car, no?"

Fury engulfed her the more she said, her emotions getting out of control. Lauren got up from her seat and walked to the window, where it was more peaceful. Willy, on the other hand, was already in tears then.

It was said that men don't cry easily, but he could no longer contain his emotions right then.

He couldn't believe the person who mattered to him most had always loathed and misunderstood him so much!
