Lauren threw herself at Yvette and intuitively pulled her into her arms, shielding her from harm's way before they went tumbling down.
Willy heard a booming 'thump' as he exited the elevator and the floor seemingly shook the next split second.
Before he could process what just happened, a series of chaotic footsteps accompanied by a heartrending bawl traveled to his ears.
"Miss Lauren!"
"Mommy! Mommy! Wah..."
Laurie?
Instantly, Willy dashed toward the stairwell, his sanity out the window, only to see Lauren lying on the floor. Two bodyguards stood beside her, not knowing how to help her, while Yvette tugged on her shirt, bawling.
"Laurie..."
Blood drained from Willy's face as he rushed downstairs and knelt beside her, holding her in his arms. He first patted her face to wake her up before checking her pulse on her neck.
"Laurie, wake up..."
"What are you guys just standing there for? Call a doctor!"
Picking Lauren up, Willy glared behind him, and the caretaker hurriedly picked Yvette up while a bodyguard helped Willy, leaving the other one dashing upstairs.
"Doctor, doctor!"
The medical staff pushed a patient trolley over as Willy brought Lauren back upstairs, and suddenly her eyes opened. "Yvette... Baby..."
Holding her hand, Willy hurriedly took Yvette from the caretaker. "Don't worry, she's fine! Hang in there, Laurie!"
"Mommy..."
Clearly frightened, Yvette bawled her eyes out, showing no signs of stopping anytime soon. Seeing the two in front of her, Lauren slowly put her raised hand down and closed her eyes.
"Doctor!"
Following that, the group hurriedly pushed the trolley into the elevator, straight to the emergency room. Willy's face was grim to the core as he held Yvette in his arms.
After the emergency room door closed, Willy hurriedly brought Yvette further away to comfort her.
"It's okay, Yvette, don't cry. Mommy is exhausted; she'll need to sleep for a while. You'll disturb her if you cry. Don't cry, okay?"
"There, there, daddy's here!"
"Everything's going to be okay, Yvette, don't cry anymore, okay?"
Willy's mind was all over the place as he did a quick check on Yvette in his arms. "Are you hurt anywhere, Yvette? Tell Daddy."
Stifling her sobs, Yvette bit her lips and shook her head.
Doing another quick check on her, Willy eased a little, seeing that though her hair was ruffled and parts of her body got dusty, she didn't greatly react when he squeezed her tiny limbs.
Thank heavens she wasn't injured, falling from such a tall flight of stairs! Lauren had probably cushioned her with her whole body.
He held his breath as the thought came to him. Seeing that Yvette had calmed down a little, no longer sobbing as she had been, he picked her up again.
"Listen, Yvette, Daddy will take you to a doctor for a checkup. We'll be able to see Mommy when you come back. Be a good girl and listen to the doctor, okay?"
Seeing she nodded, Willy had someone keep an eye on the situation in the emergency room while he brought Yvette to a pediatrician for a thorough examination and quick x-ray scan.
The red light above the door was still brightly lit when they rushed back. Unprecedentedly nervous, Willy held his baby girl tightly in his arms as he paced back and forth by the door, his heart in his mouth the entire time.
Soon, the emergency room door opened.
"Doctor, how's my wife? Is she okay?"
The doctor slightly panted as he took his mask off, seemingly exhausted, explaining after taking a breath.
"The patient has multiple abrasions on her body; fractured arm and a few hairline fractures. Something has cut her right arm open as well. We took some time cleaning the wound, but it has been stitched up. Fortunately, she didn't injure any of her organs or vital parts. As far as we can see, her injuries are mostly superficial. It seems that the patient has some knowledge of selfprotection. But because of the severe impact, she has signs of a mild concussion. Coupled with blood loss and anesthetic, she's currently semiconscious. Everything can only be confirmed after the patient wakes up. Have her hospitalized for a few days for observation for now."
"Okay, good, thank you, doctor!"
Willy's eyes red-rimmed from oncoming tears as he spoke, voice evidently quivering. Thank the heavens.
Lauren was transferred to the ward that evening. Willy felt as though his heart had been torn into pieces as he looked at his bandage- riddled beloved, holding Yvette in his arms as they kept vigil by her bedside.
"Laurie, I'm sorry... Things wouldn't be like this if I came and picked you guys up sooner..."
"Please wake up soon. Yvette and I are waiting for you!"
Right as Yvette reached her hand out, wanting to pounce on Lauren, Willy hurriedly pulled her back.
"Yvette, we can't touch Mommy's arm! Good girl, don't touch Mommy; she'll be in pain! Are you hungry, Yvette? Why don't I take you out for dinner?"
Willy's heart ached as he looked at Yvette; they hadn't even had dinner yet with all that had happened.
