As expected, the brawl made the headlines. Jake had just cleared his name and got back to work. The news of him wrestling with a citizen was a tough setback. Soon, phone calls started spamming the police station, and of course, they were all aimed at Jake.
He was given yet another warning. Not only was he required to reflect on his actions, but he faced suspension from duty once again.
Waverly was at her wit's end when she received Jake's calls of complaint. She wanted to scold him, too, for sticking his nose into other people's businesses, but she couldn't bring herself to do that. Jake had a hole to vent his frustrations, but Waverly had to swallow all her rage and digest them herself.
Jake was a police officer, after all, and a dedicated one. He was a brave and righteous man, and Waverly had always admired that about him. However, the saying "never a rose without a few thorns" applied perfectly to Jake. His good qualities came with some bad ones. He was courageous, but sometimes too hasty. Oftentimes he would leap before thinking, and that gave Waverly a splitting headache.
He wasn't on duty last night. He could've called the police. If he couldn't wait that long, he could've announced his identity as a police officer. He should've understood the situation before making his next move. But he was Jake Lamer, so of course, he chose violence instead-
Suddenly, Waverly wondered if Jake's impulsiveness gave that woman a chance to slander him! Jake's rash personality might've been the reason he got detained last time! She begged for her brother's help to get Jake out, and even though Harry was a powerful man, he was in a different city, which made things a little bit more complicated. Harry did his best, though, and Jake was released, but now he got himself into trouble, again!
She was about to blow up!
Another thought abruptly struck Waverly, "Did Wyatt have a hand in the incident last time?" She couldn't help but wonder, "Am I overthinking stuff again? Was it really just a coincidence?"
Nevertheless, Jake was in hot water yet again. It was already the second time this week. Waverly recalled the troubles she had to go through to get him out last time, and the mere thought of doing it all again tired her. She couldn't ask for Harry's help if Jake gets detained this time. Even if she does, Jake would probably jump into the fire right after getting out of the frying pan. She needed a more permanent solution!
Waverly collected her thoughts and buried her emotions as she soothed the man on the phone.
"It's alright, Jake, what's been done is done, you can't do anything now! There were security cameras, weren't there? If things turn too bad, we can go find that woman from last night, right? Even if they're wife and husband, domestic abuse is still illegal! Think of your suspension as a little holiday, you've been working so hard, after all! Don't be upset!
Jake, you're an officer, you're not God, you can't save everyone, and sometimes, sometimes the world just doesn’t make sense! Just don't be so impulsive next time, alright? Think things through before you act, okay?"
Maybe he doesn't care about what would happen to him, but he should at least think about his family and relatives!
Waverly didn't know the true reasons behind Jake's impulsiveness this time.
The woman from the previous night looked exactly like his ex. She wasn't, though. They looked so similar, but that woman wasn't his ex. He found out when he was stopping that man, but looking at that familiar face and her fragile figure, he just couldn't let that b*stard bully her. He didn't only feel anger that night, he felt something else. It was an odd and terrible feeling. Perhaps nobody would ever resonate with what he felt.
He wasn't an impulsive person, but that night, that night he just couldn't control himself!
He had his reasons, but he couldn't speak them out loud! However, Jake didn't know that this incident coupled with the last had slowly changed the way Waverly saw him.
"Okay, I know I acted wrongly. It won't happen again! Waverly, don't be mad, please?"
After getting off work, she stopped by the supermarket and bought some food. She then swung by Dragon International.
After dinner, Waverly dragged Jake downstairs, "You're really a workaholic, aren't you? You really got sick from relaxing!"
She took Jake to the pharmacy downstairs. He got a small injection, and they bought a couple of medicine for his cold before the couple headed back to the apartment.
Jake kept sneezing on their way back. Waverly was extremely attentive, though. She handed him tissues and water to soothe his condition. Nevertheless, his condition continued to worsen, and Waverly couldn't help but feel concerned.
“Your cold is getting worse. Do you have a fever?"
Jake was a little dizzy, but that didn't stop him from comforting Waverly, "Nah, I actually feel more comfortable now that my airway is clear! I'm fine!"
"Alright. When we go back, take your medication and rest well-''
Waverly still subconsciously put her arm on Jake to help him back to his apartment. However, just as she was about to move, a graceful man strolled down from a black Rolls Royce nearby. She locked eyes with the man, and suddenly Waverly's mind went blank. Her mouth was wide open, but she didn't know what to say. Wyatt, on the other hand, was stern and indifferent. He walked past her as though he didn't recognize the woman he used to love.
"Welcome, Mr. Johnson. This way, please!"
