Waverly tossed and turned all night, but sleep never came.

She went to the detention facility the next day. She had initially wanted to get some motivation and strength to continue her search, but when she saw Jake, she felt as if someone had punched her a couple times in the face.

Jake was so dispirited that he seemed to have aged a decade even though he had just been detained a few days. His beard was filthy and messy, and the spark in his eyes was gone. It was as though some illness had taken over him. He looked like a dead body breathing.

"Jake?"

Waverly didn't expect the detainment to take such a heavy toll on him. She was feeling depressed enough, but Jake's depression was on another level. She immediately put aside her feelings as she wanted to give him a huge hug and tell him everything was okay, but the staff wouldn't allow it. She could only sit down at one end of the long table while Jake sat at the other.

"Are you alright? Jake, the law is fair and impartial! You didn't hurt anyone, so you're gonna be fine! You have to have faith...in your colleagues! They'll get you out! I won't let anything bad happen to you! I won't!"

Jake seemed like a walking zombie, and it broke Waverly's heart. "We've found important leads on that wife," she subconsciously blurted out, "Don't give up now!"

He used to be like sunshine. He used to be an embodiment of joy and justice! What happened?

Waverly happened. No matter how good or bad the man was, every man who had associated himself with her had a terrible ending.

She was the Black Widow, after all.

Was she destined to continue her life alone? She was born alone, and was she going to die alone, too? A true Black Widow.

People used to say things like that about her, and she used to feel bitter about their harsh comments.

However, looking back at them now, they were right all along, weren't they? She had tried so hard to overcome every challenge and problem on the way, but look at where she ended up still? Life was brutal and disappointing. Perhaps "happily ever after" really did just exist in fairy tales.

Waverly tried comforting Jake for a long time, but Jake acted like he was deaf. He gave no response, which made the room more suffocating every second.

"Jake, there must be a way. You'll be alright, I'll make sure—"

Just as she was running out of things to say, a deep and husky voice suddenly said, "There's no need..."

He spoke so gently, so softly, but his three words crushed Waverly. She raised her gaze and met his eyes. She was visibly stunned as she could not believe her ears.

Waverly's lips twitched. Jake opened his mouth again, "If I go to jail, will you wait for me?"

Waverly paused. It was as if time itself had paused. She never thought about it! Jake's sudden question caught her by surprise.

They locked eyes for what seemed like decades. She refused to utter a word because she didn’t know what to say! She didn't know the answer, either!

Would she wait for him? For ten years?

Could she?

She loved him with all her heart, but ten years? Could she possibly do it?

All of a sudden, love seemed like a luxury to her. Of course, falling in love was a pleasant experience, but it wasn't really that important! She could live without it.

Waverly pursed her lips. She couldn't lie to him. No, not even a simple white lie!

Jake's lips suddenly curled into a grin. He was smiling.

His smile was so serene and indifferent. The zombie from earlier had disappeared as his usual merry soul returned to his body. He didn't say anything, but Waverly got the message.

"It doesn't matter. You don't have to do anything for me anymore. It's alright, even if I go to jail, it's alright!"

Waverly vaguely smelled something odd, but before she could determine what it was, Jake spoke again, "You're so haggard. Oh, you even have circles under your eyes! You haven't been eating or sleeping well, huh?"

After a small pause, his burning eyes suddenly landed on her. The spark in his eyes had returned as Waverly could feel his affection, even from such a distance.

"Waverly, take care of yourself! If I behave well in prison, my sentence will be reduced. They'll probably charge me for assault, but since the knife wasn't mine, it wasn't intentional! Sure, the lawyer said ten years, but maybe I can get out in one! There are a bunch of paths we can take, and this one, this one's a little hard, so well just change plans! We don’t have to settle this right now and right here. I used to be the one putting people behind bars, I wonder what it'll be like-"

Waverly knew what Jake was doing. He was being brave for her. She wanted to do the same, but tears still welled up in her eyes.

Jake wasn't as naive as Waverly. He had met so many different people, and he was part of the force, so he knew how vicious men were!

That was why he looked so terrible. He had already given up hope!

His sacrifice moved Waverly, but it also broke her heart. He really gave it a lot of thought, huh?

Why the heck would someone from a powerful family like her want to marry into a rich family that bad? She didn't need the money. She wouldn't need to pull any evil tricks for the wealth she already had. People even gossiped about how she didn't have a mother, how her stepmother ignored her, how her sister got all the love...ridiculous! The truth was everything but that. The Castle family had always treated both men and women equally, and she had never been ignored. In fact, she had been pampered for years!

Jake really liked her from the bottom of his heart, but he knew that even though he came from an alright family, he was nothing to the Castle family. If Waverly hadn't been so different, he'd never even had the chance to meet someone from a family like hers.

Even though they may not have a future together, Jake still wanted to bet on it. He didn't want to lose her, he didn't want her to lose herself for his sake!

As long as she doesn't find someone else, as long as they don't break up, they'd always have a shot!

Time was up before they could finish their conversation. Waverly insisted on giving Jake a warm hug before leaving.

"I won't let anything happen to you!" She assured him.

Waverly couldn't control herself any longer after walking out the door. She broke down, crying.

Why? Why couldn't she just enjoy a simple relationship with someone? Why couldn't she just have a relationship without a third party? Without any family ciashings? Why did outside forces keep breaking her relationships apart?

Waverly wandered the streets for the rest of the day. She received a couple phone calls, but both were disappointing. The last one was from the lawyer. He said that their evidence wasn't enough and Jake would probably be charged with assault. Without a witness, it was inevitable!

Waverly eventually returned home as the sun started setting. She took off her coat and changed into a thin white blouse and a pair of black trousers. She then washed off her makeup and put on some foundation before leaving again-
