Knowing well what situation awaited him, Elijah stepped forward to enter the door without saying a word.
Upon entering the door, the first thing he saw was a few dishes on the table delicately plated. It seemed that the authentic Korean dishes were from the hotel. There was a bowl of noodles, cold noodles dressed in sauce, probably for fear of the noodles turning soggy from waiting for him if she were to order a bowl of soup noodles. There were two servings on the table. From what it appeared, the side dishes were left untouched. A pair of chopsticks were used, while a chair was moved out of place as if someone had gotten several bites of the food, standing.
There was a bouquet of fake flowers in the middle of the table, which was a decoration from the hotel. A box situated at the corner of the table was a sight piercing to the eyes, especially the missing corner of the birthday cake.
As his eyes swept past, a vivid image would automatically appear in Elijah's mind, like sharp knives coated with poison slicing across his heart.
He knew that she must have waited for him for some time!
Yet, the affair he had to deal with would take up two days, so even if he was given the chance to start all over again, he would have no choice but to repeat the cycle! It was because the matter was not only related to Kim Mi-chi but she might also be harmed.
He would never allow Kim Mi-chi's experience to repeat to her!
He clenched his fists so tightly that his knuckles creaked. He never tried to explain, knowing that it was useless to explain since what he was going to say next would make her feel worse!
It was why he would rather her stay cold than affect other emotions.
She wondered if he had heard rumors about the kidney source and wanted to talk about it, so Carolien remained fairly silent while she had doubts in her heart. She first placed all the items aside before turning her attention to the opened cake box. It was neither too big nor too small. From the semi-transparent box, she knew that it was her favorite cream cake. At the sight of the rose's color, she found that it was her favorite light color, leaving her to wonder for herself if he was trying to avoid scandals or if he was well aware of her preferences, let alone the handmade soap as a gift. Every gift showed Uncle Collins' affection for her, so Carolien placed extra care in keeping the gifts aside with complicated feelings.
No matter if it was for Guillermo Collins or to show his feelings for her, Carolien was feeling both touched and odd at the same time. Of course, she had never thought about the two being the same person, but the thought of her uncle and nephew loving her at the same time crept her out. After all, she did not think of her being such a charming person. To her, she was just an ordinary person with a tiny bit more beauty. Perhaps she was special, but her uniqueness wasn't pride originating from her beauty. Instead, it was the inferiority she felt from her family background, so Carolien had never felt honored. Instead, she found it strange!
After keenly witnessing all of her actions, Elijah's emotions swirled in a turmoil of complexity. Even if he wanted to take his life at the moment, there was nothing he could do about it!
It was why once Carolien met his eyes, he spoke up, "I'm a little hungry. Can I eat before we start?"
As soon as his voice faded away, Carolien's face darkened. "Don't try wasting time!"
Of course, the other reason for her grumpiness was the thought of how he might have been all wrapped up in business for someone else. Not to mention the previous trouble, but he wouldn't stop playing tricks after entering the door. Uncertain if he was fine or truly worn out, she didn't bother to entertain him with much politeness.
Not knowing if it was a coincidence or if he was truly starving, Elijah's stomach started to growl. Although it was very soft, Carolien did hear it. Seeing how he did not say a word with his face haggardly tired, she glanced at the cold rice on the table from the corner of her eyes. To her disbelief, there was a flash of heartache in her heart as she could barely resist the urge in telling him to warm the food up. The thought put Carolien in a worse mood and she snapped.
"It's up to you!"
With that, she turned sideways and looked away. She hated herself for being so disappointing. Why should she care about him right then? It was better if he could starve to death! So be it if his food was cold. How was it any of her business?!
Her heart was filled with righteous indignation. At the thought of how she was fuming on her birthday when she should be happily enjoying her time instead, Carolien's expression grew uglier.
Yet, it was how she would feel to love a man. Whenever she hated him, she could barely hold herself back from stabbing him with a knife, but she couldn't help feeling concerned and soft-hearted. Perhaps the first to fall in love was destined to be heartbroken!
Without saying a word, Elijah turned to the table beside him. The first thing he did was slice a small piece of cake and mumble the words "Happy birthday" to himself before sullenly eating it up.
When she caught sight of the scene from the corner of her eye, Carolien was a little stunned. He didn't have a sweet tooth, and whenever he would eat sugary food, it would just be a bite or two! Yet, he first started with the cake. Could it be that he was truly famished?
On second thought of how it was a birthday cake, all of Carolien's ups and downs were instantly suppressed and calmed by a different emotion.
