Lindsay bent over and gave Benson the money. She even hid it under his shirt. "Don't take it out until you're back in your room, okay?"
"You're full of crap! Do you even need to tell me that?"
With a sneer, Lindsay said nothing more. Just as Benson was about to turn around, she took out a candy, unwrapped it and stuffed it in her mouth.
At that, Benson turned around as well. "I want one too! Give me one!"
Without refusing, Lindsay held out another red-wrapped candy. "I'm down to my last one. You can eat it here before you leave. If your mother finds out, she'll make another remark about you. I'm not going to take this reprimand even though you're the family's baby."
As the Crouch family felt Benson was overweight, he was banned from eating sweets. Candy, for example, was outright forbidden.
"I know that! I only want one of your candies, and yet you're nagging so much!"
After unwrapping the candy, Benson threw it into his mouth and chewed it. He then had a disgruntled look of disgust. "This candy is delicious! Why don't you buy some more? Next time, get me two more packs! You're such a scrooge!"
"I can't just get it right away! These candies are imported and they aren't even available for purchase with cash. I had to find someone to get it and wait a few months for it to be shipped here. It's costly! I couldn't even bring myself to eat it. All right, all right! I'll save the candy for you next time. Get out of here! Make sure your mother doesn't see you. Remember to drink water when you get back."
With that admonition, Lindsay started to chase him away.
"I won't get caught by my mom. I'm not an idiot! How can I get caught eating candy? Hmph!"
As he crammed the money under his shirt, he grunted. Pulling open the door and looking around, he then squeezed out. Soon after, a light running was heard. Meanwhile, Lindsay, with an evil grin, squatted down and picked up the red candy wrapper discarded on the floor.
She then shut the door and returned to the table where she grabbed a lighter from the side and burned the candy wrapper.
There were sparks among the flames and her sight followed a lurch as a thought popped in her mind...
Meanwhile, Alicia reported to Soaver International on time over the next few days. However, her days seemed to get harder and harder each day.
Still going through the company's rules and regulations at her desk, she frowned. She felt like she was being under-utilized.
Although a few days had passed, there were still various rumors about her in the company. She also got the distinct feeling that her colleagues treated her like air. Her original plan of making an effort was worn out by idleness, day after day. On the contrary, her disgust was rising!
She hated it here!
This was the only thing that came to mind every time she stepped into the office. Along with that, every time she thought of Frederick, all kinds of negative emotions began to weigh on her body.
She did try to communicate with Giselle but the response she got was always, "Get her familiar with the environment!"
But, what should she get familiar with? No one told her anything. Instead, she was asked to do odd jobs and run errands. Every time she tried to help out with something, no one would take her up on it. At first, she felt indifferent but after a few days, she felt more and more useless. Even if she was making do with the day, she felt inexplicably resentful.
To her, it was better to be the head of a dog than the tail of a lion.
Alicia had a wonderful time working at JT Translation Services as the premier senior translator. Her worth, on the other hand, seemed to be reduced to serving tea and printing papers here. Realizing this, she became more determined about her original plan.
As she was pondering, another document was thrown onto her desk. "Make two copies for me; one for storage!"
However, grades had nothing to do with translation skills. Her French was so fluid on a regular basis that she had no trouble conversing with foreigners for days. Not to mention the presence of online auto word translation, autocorrect, and all kinds of dictionaries, she could basically handle them with those aids. Hence, she clearly understood what people in the office meant when they judged her language abilities and spoke poorly about her in front of her. It was just that she didn't bother caring.
As Alicia had something to pass the time, her days didn't feel so sad anymore.
Occasionally though, people would come over and bother her. In no time, the folders on her desk were roped into a pile. Each one even had a sticky note attached.
Glancing at the documents, she pretended not to see anything.
When she was tired, she got up to make a cup of tea. Upon returning, she then scribbled and day-dreamt for a while.
Meanwhile, in the manager's office, Jennifer and Liane Simon, a colleague, had just finished reporting on their work. The two then exchanged glances and began to complain.
"Miss Giselle! Who is Alicia exactly? How do we work with someone who took Grade 6 French papers three times? Look at her! All she does is shirk work. She's either chatting, surfing the Internet, putting on makeup, or hooking up with men every day! The workplace has almost been converted into a nightclub!"
"Right? We're all so busy, yet she's not helping at all! Miss Giselle, why don't you take care of her? Besides, language is an art that can't be learned in a day or two."
"I agree! She can't understand anything we say! How can such a person work with us? Her foundation is bad, and yet she refuses to put in any effort. We can't train her even if we want to. Instead of coming here, she should return to school!" "Miss Giselle, how can anyone of her standard remain in our group? Won't our performance be dragged down by her? Wouldn't anything we've done going to be destroyed if she gets her hands on it?"
Jennifer and Liane expressed their opinions without hesitation. Without saying it directly, they implied that people like her should be kicked out.
Looking up, Giselle frowned slightly. She then turned and said, "I'll assign her some basic tasks. Before I make concrete plans, let's see what happens later."
