Chapter 166
SAGE
I didn’t manage to sleep last night. No matter how much I willed my body to rest, exhaustion never fully claimed me. The dull, persistent pain radiating from the wound on my back made every movement agonizing, but that wasn’t the real reason I couldn’t close my eyes.
It was Titus.
The image of him was burned into my mind. Every time I shut my eyes, I saw him fighting against the odds, protecting us without hesitation. And now, I had no idea if he was still fighting or if he had already lost.
The thought sent a sharp pang through my chest.
I was terrified.
Terrified that if I allowed myself even a moment of rest, something terrible would happen. That the next time I opened my eyes, someone would come bearing the worst news possible.
I turned my head, my gaze settling on Harper and Cooper, curled up together in their sleep. Their small chests rose and fell in a steady rhythm, their peaceful expressions a stark contrast to the chaos we had barely escaped.
A faint sense of relief washed over me.
At least they were safe.
At least, for now, they didn’t have to carry the weight of everything that was happening around them.
I reached out, gently brushing a strand of hair away from Harper’s face before doing the same to Cooper. A small, tired smile tugged at my lips as they instinctively nuzzled closer to each other in their sleep.
They were my only source of comfort in this moment–the only thing keeping me grounded.
However, that peace didn’t last long. I jolted upright at the sudden noise coming from outside the room. My heart pounded in my chest as hurried footsteps echoed through the hallway, growing louder by the second.
Before I could react, the door burst open. Several guards stormed inside, their faces void of any emotion, their stance rigid and intimidating.
My first instinct was to shield Harper and Cooper, my arms instinctively wrapping around their sleeping forms.
“What is the meaning of this?” I demanded, my voice sharp despite my exhaustion.
One of the guards stepped forward, his gaze cold and unwavering. “Lady Sage, you are to come with us immediately. The council demands your presence.”
I stiffened.
The council.
I should have expected this. After everything that happened, there was no way they’d let me walk away without answering for it.
“I’m not going anywhere,” I stated firmly, my grip tightening around my children. “Not until someone tells me what this is about.”
“The council has charged you with the crime of endangering His Majesty,” the guard said without hesitation. “You must

stand trial before the court,”
My breath caught in my throat.
Endangering His Majesty?
I stared at the guard, my mind racing. Something must have happened.
“His Majesty?” I repeated, my voice barely above a whisper. “Is Titus-?”
“His Majesty is still alive,” the guard interrupted, but there was a hint of something unreadable in his tone. “However, your actions have put him in grave danger, and the council will not overlook it.”
I clenched my fists, a wave of frustration and fear washing over me.
They were twisting everything.
I haven’t even stepped foot in the palace for the past three years. And now, they were blaming me for the attack that happened?
“I did nothing to endanger him,” I hissed.
“Save your argument for the court, my lady,” the guard cut me off. “Please come with us. Now.”
A sharp knock of authority rang in his voice, and behind him, the other guards tensed, preparing for resistance. The guards behind him walked to my side and grabbed me on both of my arms. As they were about to drag me out of the room, I heard Harper’s voice behind.
“Mommy?”
“Harper, take care of your brother and stay inside the room,” I ordered her.
“What is happening? Where are you taking my mommy?”
“Harper, sweetie, please stay out of this. Let Mommy handle this, okay?”
“Where are you taking my mommy!” Harper shouted, and a powerful force surrounds her once again.
It’s happening again.
The guards quickly draw their guns and point them at Harper.
“No! Please! They’re innocents! She’s just a child!” I pleaded.
This time, Cooper has already awakened, and when he finally realizes what’s happening, he as well starts to shift, which causes more tension around the room.
“Shoot them!” the head guard ordered.
With all the force I got, I snatched my arms away from the guards and immediately ran in front of the kids to shield them.
“Stand down!” I screamed, throwing my arms out to shield Harper and Cooper as my body became their only barrier against the drawn weapons.
The room buzzed with raw energy–Harper’s power crackling like lightning in the air, Cooper’s growls deepening as his tiny form trembled, caught between human and wolf. The maids and servants cowered in the corner, their faces pale with fear, while the guards, weapons steady, held their ground.
“Lower your weapons!” I pleaded, my voice breaking. “They’re just children! They don’t understand what’s happening!”
