Chapter 149: Xion doesn’t Want His Lover To Be An Old Man Like Darius?

The healer had no clue how he managed to enter the carriage.

Ah, no. He, in fact, did not.

He was directly carried inside! In front of so many eyes at that!

As soon as Darius placed him on the cushioned seat, Xion scrambled to the farthest corner, his back practically glued to the window.

His entire body was still burning, and no amount of frantic ’calm down’ screaming in his mind seemed to help.

Darius, on the other hand, reclined lazily across from him.

The wheels rolled over the pathway. With each jerk, his tall legs brushed against Xion’s knee.

All the while, the archduke made no move to stop it.

Rather he was amusingly watching how his nominal husband was trying so hard not to say... something.

This silly kitten was the only one Darius could not figure out. Even now, with his face still slightly red, Xion had been silent for nearly a quarter of an hour.

The crimson on his cheeks faded. His lips parted as if to say something and then hesitated before falling silent again. And now his lips were pursed as a frown settled over his brows.

"What?" Darius finally asked. "Just say it."

Why are you looking so troubled when I am here?

The archduke was confident that he could solve Xion’s worries. Well, most of them.

After spending so many days with Xion, even he was not so confident about it anymore.

"The crown prince hates you." Xion spoke. "And his father also does not seem to like you too much."

Darius hummed lightly. At first, His Majesty had been kind. Well, as kind as sitting on that powerful throne allowed him to be.

Darius was glad that he was sent to the war. Because that was when he established his own power and status through his hard work.

If the king was truly looking after him or was just using him to kill his enemies, it never mattered to him. It was a win-win situation for both of them.

However, now the king had turned older, and old people, especially the ones holding power, tended to go senile before dying.

"Won’t he cause trouble for you? Will you be fine?" Xion was really worried about the way his majesty was glaring at him and Darius.

"He’s only gotten more predictable," The archduke shrugged lightly as if he were not talking about the king but a mere commoner. "That’s all."

Darius could see it actually. It was, without a doubt, Isidor’s influence.

The crown prince’s words had made their home in the recesses of His Majesty’s brain, making him think it as his own idea to get rid of him.

But in reality, it was all just fluke. A fake facade of a lovely son looking after the bad guys (mainly him) who might or might not be after his father’s power.

Xion’s frown did not loosen a bit, "Predictable... but still dangerous."

"Dangerous only if you are weak." Darius leaned forward, and the shift in his posture was enough to make Xion press himself further into the corner.

His Xion was weak. So fragile that even a slight push from the royal family and he would break so easily.

So, it was only natural for the archduke to pull him under his protection. As for the reason... Xion was his.

Call him his advisor, healer, or plaything... the name did not matter anymore.

What mattered was Xion was exactly where he should be. In front of me...

"I might be anything, but weak." Darius carefully said those words. As if he was making sure that Xion knew who he really was.

Not explicitly though. Not yet.

The archduke’s fingers tapped against his knee. A lazy, rhythmic motion that somehow felt more unsettling than his usual sharp glares.

"His majesty was looking at me weirdly," Xion muttered. "And that crown prince, he was watching you like he’s waiting for an excuse to do something bad to you. I don’t like any of them."

The tapping of the long finger halted.

Darius leaned back, resting his chin on the back of his hand, silently observing the worry in Xion’s eyes.

"Are you worried about me?" Darius asked even after knowing it.

"Of course, I am. I am your ’advisor’, remember?" Xion joked as he finally looked at Darius.

But there was no light chuckle or even a slight curl of his Grace’s lips.

So embarrassing... Am I really that bad at telling jokes?

Xion silently mused as his gaze met the pale green eyes, and suddenly, he thought that those eyes were really too pretty.

They were like crystals, less shiny, and yet had the power to hypnotize anyone with their mesmerizing beauty.

Xion had to cough lightly to break the strange silence. He silently stared at His Grace, for him to speak.

But why?

He is just teasing me. Don’t think too much.

He must have heard it wrong. How could he not be Xion’s type?
