When Xion raised his head, his eyes caught the strange scene.
The view made his breath falter. He even forgot about the throbbing ache in his skull.
With wide eyes, he slowly reached out. His finger shook slightly as he touched the now three different manas twisting and tangling with each other in the air.
Until... there was no more.
"Damn it! How did I miss this!"
There was no more violent energy on the verge of blasting anything it could reach.
The mana was still murky, but it was lighter now, like black coffee with a swirl of milk.
And that "milk" in the coffee was his own mana, mingling with the green one.
It was like chemotherapy followed by a bone marrow transplant.
Xion waved his fingers, letting more of his mana drill into the mass of energies.
He watched how the entire palm-sized ball became lighter in color. Albeit slow in the process, the result was in front of him.
Xion realized why he had always felt that everything was in front of his eyes.
He had been too blinded.
Muddled by the mystery of the Moonshade Affliction, by Minato-sensei’s sudden appearance, by the way magic distorted logic... it had all led him to overlook the simplest truth.
He had subconsciously stopped treating it as a normal disease. But in the end, that’s exactly what it was.
And if it was a disease ... who better to treat it than a doctor?
He, Xion, was a doctor.
Yet, somewhere along the way, he had let the existence of mana cloud his judgment.
"How stupid of me!" Xion smacked his head in frustration.
A sharp sting shot through his skull, and his eyes teared up on reflex.
He had hit the exact same swollen spot. Again.
Xion let out a pitiful groan but still grinned through the pain.
Yes, he was frustrated with himself. His negligence had only prolonged Darius’ suffering.
But despite that... A beautiful smile bloomed on his face.
He had finally found it!
His watery eyes shimmered with unshed tears as a giddy giggle escaped his lips. He felt even happier than the time he managed to escape from the Marquis’ mansion!
Ah, that place ... Xion quickly composed himself, reining in his grin before he practically skipped back toward the room.
Never in his life had he thought he would be this glad to return to this room.
Xion was amused by the twisted fate.
Then, the sound of frantic footsteps echoing outside the closed doors made his heart skip a beat.
He glanced at the time, only to realize that he had been in the lab for more than ten hours!
It was always like this. When he got his hands on something he was interested in, no matter if it was a book or a new medical theory, he would lose himself in it completely.
And now that more than an hour had passed in the real world, Xion knew it even without checking anything.
He had absolutely, completely, and utterly messed up.
Ray was not in the room, which was unusual. That was unless the one he was supposed to protect was also missing
With all the strict protection Darius had been surrounding him with, Xion was sure that by now the archduke must be alerted of his possible "disappearance".
Xion sighed. "And here I thought I would give you some good news."
Without wasting another second, he walked toward the door. The moment he cracked it open, the darkness enveloped him.
BAM.
He walked straight into a solid, unmoving wall.
Another pained groan soon echoed in the hallway.
Xion rubbed his forehead for the third time that day. He squinted up at the person to scold for standing in the doorway only to grin.
"You’re here."
The sight of Darius’ stone-cold face brought an odd sense of déjà vu.
Xion, already flying on the cliff of happiness let out a soft chuckle.
He poked Archduke’s cheek with his finger. "It’s like we’re repeating history, aren’t we, Your Grace?"
This was also how Xion met Darius Rael Darkhelm for the first time. At that moment, Xion was terrified of both Ray and Darius.
However, now that was not the case. Xion blinked his big eyes at the archduke and waited for him to respond
Nonetheless, the taller man did not speak. He just stared at the smiling figure. Meanwhile the glint in his otherwise dull green eyes was raging silently.
Darius was furious.
No, furious wasn’t enough to describe it. The past hour had been hell.
It did not take more than ten minutes for His Grace to convince the Marquis so he would willingly sign the papers for Xion’s freedom.
Xion was gone.
You are bound to be alone. Who would want to stay with you?
