Just as Alyssa was about to brush shoulders with Jasper, he suddenly reached out to hold her arm. “Where are you going?”

“I can’t stay by your side, Mr. Beckett.” She slowly removed her arm from his grasp with a faint smile. Anger flooded his veins. He wanted to say something, only to be interrupted by Sophia, who approached them arm in arm with Liana.

“Alice, I’m so glad you came. I thought you were going to skip the event.”

“Mrs. Beckett, I have no reason to be absent. Grandpa has been looking forward to celebrating his birthday with Jasper and me,” Alyssa countered with a calm smile.
