The counterfeit worked! 

Betty had nervously handed it to Ada. She had been terrified of being found out.

“Thank you. Now leave us.” Sophia took the letter and shut the door. 

She opened the envelope to find two invitations to a charity auction for jewelry. She pursed her lips, her 

expression darkened.
