As soon as he walked in, Nigel spoke up, "The note is real. We’re going there now."
Yvonne looked at him like he was talking nonsense. How could a kidney transplant be that simple?
She had already started accepting the reality of her illness and didn’t want to make any more effort to change it.
Ignoring her, Nigel picked her up and carried her out.
"What are you doing? Put me down!" she protested, embarrassed as nurses and patients stared at them. Her face turned red, wishing she could disappear.
Nigel didn’t seem to care about the attention and continued carrying her, placing her in the car. Furious, Yvonne demanded, "Do you think this will make me feel grateful or something?"
Nigel started the engine. "You’ve got it wrong. I just want you to live. There’s finally hope now, and I don’t want to miss it." He sped up the car, running several red lights as they raced toward the address in the southern part of the city.
When they arrived at the location written on the note, they were both taken aback by what they saw. It was a rundown house that looked nothing like a place run by a small business. It was more like an abandoned property.
"Stay behind me," Nigel instructed, putting himself in front of Yvonne as he cautiously approached the door. Just as he raised his hand to knock, the door creaked open.
The yard was clean, and an elderly woman was hanging clothes on a line. Nigel asked, "Ma’am, is this the home of David Lincoln?"
The old woman, Shelly Lincoln, paused, turned slowly to get a better look at them, squinting as if to assess who they were.
After a long moment, she nodded. "David is my husband. What do you want with him?"
Relief washed over Nigel as he led Yvonne inside. Once they were in front of Shelly, he introduced Yvonne and explained why they had come.
The elderly couple exchanged a sorrowful look, their faces lined with sadness.
Nigel’s heart sank, but he pushed on for Yvonne’s sake, asking again.
This time, David sighed softly. "Young man, we do have something to offer, but shouldn’t you at least come inside first? You can stand, but I can’t."
His frail body trembled as if he might collapse any second. Nigel quickly reached out to steady him. He noticed how thin and weak David’s arm felt beneath his grip but he said nothing and nodded in agreement.
The four of them entered the house, one after the other. David asked Shelly to make tea while he invited Yvonne and Nigel to sit down.
"Miss Yvonne, I bet you're not used to sitting on hard benches. I’ve got some cushions for you both. Here, take these." David handed them two brand-new cushions, clearly trying his best to make them comfortable.
