Looking at his parents, Eugene felt only pity. This was what happened when you couldn’t be with the one you loved. He had no intention of repeating their mistakes.

He knew how deeply he loved Lydia. Once they were married, he would make sure to come home to her every night. They would share their lives together, and when they had children, they would travel as a family. His marriage would be nothing like his parents’.

“My wedding is my own business,” he told them, his tone firm. “I called you here to inform you, not to ask for permission. We’ll have both families meet soon. Try not to embarrass me.”

With that, he walked away. There was nothing more to say to them.

Later, as he reached out to Mr. Fay to arrange a dinner for the families, he received an apologetic response. “Sorry, Eugene, but Lydia’s off traveling right now. I’m not sure when she’ll be back. Let’s discuss this again sometime later.”

The vagueness in Mr. Fay’s words wasn’t lost on Eugene. Both men understood that “sometime later” likely meant Mr. Fay had no real interest in a dinner meeting, much less a family alliance.

“Mr. Fay, it’s fine if Lydia isn’t back yet. Our parents can still meet first,” Eugene insisted, unwilling to let it go.

He had already told his parents about the dinner, and if it didn’t happen, what would they think?

But Mr. Fay was unyielding. “Eugene, this is an important step for both families. We need to wait for Lydia to return so she can weigh in. It’s not something to rush.”

Eugene barely remembered ending the call. All he knew was that Lydia had left to avoid him, and even her parents no longer seemed as warm toward him as before.

He was running out of options.

“Why are people so invested? It’s their marriage, not yours. Who cares who did what? Just enjoy the gossip and leave it at that.”

Feeling smug, Eugene took screenshots of the congratulatory comments and sent them to Quincy.

In their social circles, finding Quincy’s contact was simple enough. It was late, so Eugene figured Quincy would see it in the morning. By then, he would surely be worked up with jealousy.

“Serves him right,” Eugene thought with satisfaction.

If Quincy had any sense, he would have walked away long ago. Even with the divorce finalized, he kept clinging to Lydia, and now he would get the shock he deserved.
