Jamie couldn’t help but suck in a sharp breath.

“Stop pretending.” Ben's harsh words cut through the air, as cold and unrelenting as ever.

Jamie couldn’t straighten up for a long moment. She gritted her teeth, determined to ignore the pain radiating from her wound, spreading like fire through her body. Sweat dripped from her forehead onto the pale hospital bed, leaving tiny dark stains.

“I don’t need to play games with you,” she said finally, her voice frail but resolute. “It wouldn’t work, and I don’t want to. I just want my child back.”

Ben’s sharp gaze faltered for a moment before he replied in a cold tone, “Focus on recovering first.”

With that, he turned and left the room.

Jamie slumped against the edge of the bed, exhausted and broken.

Meanwhile, Winnie drove aimlessly, following random road signs, unaware of where she was heading. The road grew increasingly desolate, with the sun sinking below the horizon and barely a soul in sight.

“Where are we, Aunt Winnie?” Charlie asked sleepily, rubbing his eyes.

Winnie snapped out of her daze. Her face, pale from blood loss, looked ghostly under the fading light.

“Somewhere fun,” she replied softly.

Charlie yawned and murmured, “I’m so tired, Aunt Winnie. My eyes feel heavy.”

“Alright,” Winnie said gently, forcing a smile. “You’ll get some rest soon, I promise.”

Charlie nodded, clutching his toy tightly as he leaned against the car seat, his eyelids growing heavy with exhaustion.

After finding a place to stay, Winnie carried Charlie inside and laid him carefully on the bed. Once he was settled and fast asleep, she retrieved a small bottle of pills, shaking a few into her hand before swallowing them. Slowly, the chill in her body began to ease.

“Thank you,” Winnie exclaimed anxiously. She then clutched Charlie tightly as she whispered reassurances. “Hang in there, Charlie. I’ll find a doctor soon. Just hold on a little longer.”

Carrying the child, she ran desperately, sweat soaking her from head to toe, but she didn’t feel tired.

When she finally found the small clinic, it was completely dark inside.

She pounded on the door with all her strength.

“Is anyone there? Please, save my child! He has a high fever and needs treatment!”

She shouted as she knocked, but in the pitch-black night, no one answered.

In that instant, despair overwhelmed her. Feeling the heat radiating from Charlie, her heart filled with sorrow. She went to knock on the neighboring doors, but still, no one responded.
